Girl killed as car crashes into house in Chicago

Councilors Set Date for East Polk Street Sewer Hearing
Washington city council met Monday night for routine business and set an 8 p.m. hearing on a proposed sanitary sewer extension on East Polk Street for July 19. Due to the Fourth of July holiday the next meeting is Tuesday July 6. Cigarette permit renewals and three beer permits were approved for Chocolate Shop Washington Cafe and Diamond Inn. A zoning change from residential to commercial was referred to the planning commission for recommendation.

Two Cedar Rapids men held over $400 rural hold up
Two Cedar Rapids men Roger Willits and Leroy Cannon were arrested near Strawberry Point after a midnight armed hold up at an Apco service station in Cedar Rapids. Patrolman Donald Mott found $418 in the getaway car and a matching shotgun. The suspects are jailed in Clayton County awaiting transfer to Cedar Rapids.

Columbus Junction hosts the Southeast Iowa Quality Lamb Show with 44 lambs shown by 4H and FFA members. Robert Huber of Wellman won with a 108 pound Suffolk, Becky Berdo of Washington placed second with a 104 pound Suffolk, and Don Bernhart of West Branch earned the best record of management practices award. 36 blue and 8 red ribbons were awarded, judges were Dewey Jantz and Dwight Duncan.
