Dr. H. P. Coy of Shenandoah and former Iowa Dental Association president will head the operative dentistry department at the University of Virginia in Richmond Ave. 15. He practiced in Hamburg for years and has spent four years in Newark as a clinical adviser.
W P A co ordinator Eduard Lindeman told the Country Life Institute at Iowa State College that America’s major economy will become cooperative. He described consumer producer co operatives and the elimination of monopolies and profit as the path forward.
A fine shower this morning ended a multi day dry spell with about 0.20 inch of rain. Yesterday’s high reached 90 degrees and the low settled near 67 degrees, cooling conditions slightly.
Ray Roth of Cedar Rapids reports the death of a Wayland native known as Mrs Barbara Arnold. The deceased leaves a husband two sons and a brother, with funeral plans pending the brother’s return from Cedar Rapids. The Roth family moved to Cedar Rapids about a decade ago.
American Legion post in Washington tentatively plans a fall festival for late August with Commander Preston Wolt authorized to form a committee. The event aims to honor the centennial year of Washington’s founding in 1839, following Chamber of Commerce discussions. The picnic and new post officers are set for August 2.
Des Moines reports a nine to ten cent per quart and five cent per pint rise in all whiskies and gins in state liquor stores effective July 1 due to a new federal tax. The Iowa Liquor Commission will pay tax on current stock, affecting about 20,000 cases or 69,000 gallons, with projected July 1 tax collection around $14,500.

John Laird age 64 died in Little Rock Arkansas. Mrs Ella Crawford, his sister, learned of his death last night. The Laird family had lived in Ainsworth and Des Moines. Surviving relatives include his wife, father Dr A J Laird, sister Ella Crawford, brother Charles, half sister Margaret Laird and half brother David Laird in Washington D C.
President Roosevelt planned a radio fireside speech from his Hyde Park home for broadcast Friday night. The event was being prepared in a secluded setting at the presidential residence in New York.
Official canvass from Iowa shows Lucy E. Hall of Newton defeating George A. Brown of Des Moines for state superintendent of public instruction on the Democratic ticket. Brown led in unofficial tallies, but Hall finished with 40,466 votes to Brown’s 39,990 and Ferrell’s 83,694 for 35.4 percent.
Officers of the Methodist Sunday school board and faculty were elected at a meeting at the Joe Knotek home after a potluck supper. Jesse Busby became general superintendent with L A Warren Wade Gardner as associate superintendents and a slate of department heads and assistants named across all divisions.
Governor Elmer A. Benson leads Hjalmar Peterson in the Minnesota farm labor primary race as 3,380 of 3,737 precincts report. Benson tallies 191,716 votes to Petersons 182,560 with results from Minneapolis dated June 22.
A program is scheduled to begin Friday night at 8 30 PM and run into the evening. The event details describe a lowg time indicating a late start.
Washington's community Playground announces a Friday field day led by Director George Mohr. Events start at 2 pm with novelty races for boys ages five to ten and 11 to 15, plus similar girl classes and a softball game. Ribbon prizes will be awarded.
Des Moines June 22 Governor Kraschel declined to name an arbitration board for the Maytag factory strike at Newton where 1,400 workers have been idle since May 9. Judge Bechly urged arbitration after a day of evidence in an injunction suit brought by the company against the CIO.

Dean Harland Mead announces a new secretarial science course with shorthand and typing at Washington junior college for next year. Course offers college credits toward a University of Iowa College of Commerce degree, with Ralph Le Moine leading instruction and support from high school reforms and new typewriters.
Sheriff Tremmell and Dr. Perkins retrieved the stolen vehicle abandoned in the north part of town near the Car Kelly home. The car contained the doctor’s instrument case and medicine bag though about 100 morphine tablets were missing, suggesting a possible drug-addicted thief.
The Public Works Administration announced approval of 291 projects nationwide valued at about 91.5 million dollars. In Iowa, Centerville City hall received a 55,350 dollar grant for a 123,000 dollar project, Dickinson county road work got 23,400 dollars toward 52,000, Iowa City athletic field 22,950 for 51,000, and Linn county bridges 30,150 for 67,000.
