Viking 1 to lower orbit for Mars landing site view

UPI reports Viking 1 will reduce its orbit to study the Chryse basin for a safe July 4 descent. An engine burn shifts to a 940 mile low point with a 10 000 mile high orbit, taking the craft once per martian day as scientists confirm the site and timing for touchdown.

Crawfordsville bank robbed by two armed bandits

Two masked robbers held up Peoples Savings Bank in Crawfordsville around 10 am stealing more than 10 000 dollars. Witnesses described a bearded man and a second with shoulder length hair, fleeing in a dark blue 1968 or 1969 Camaro later abandoned. No injuries reported. shots fired during getaway. FBI and state authorities led the search with aircraft and multiple counties involved. The incident follows a prior county bank robbery about 10 weeks earlier.

Driver Burned In One Car Crash Near Temple's Corner

Ainsworth man Willie E. Rimer II, 23, was critically burned in a high speed one car crash on county highway 638 near Temple's Corner. Rimer, in critical condition at University Hospitals Iowa City, sustained second and third degree burns over 80 percent of his body. A passenger Brenda Job, 16, was hospitalized in Washington with lesser injuries. The wreck occurred around 2:30 a.m. near West Chester, with property damage about 950 dollars. Charges pending.

Rebuttal witnesses heard by Mark jury

In Sioux City Iowa UPI the prosecution quickly rebutted defense testimony in the Jerry Mark murder trial. Mark 33 stands trial in Woodbury County for the killings of his brother Leslie and sister-in-law Jorjean and the couple’s two children. The family was found shot dead at their Cedar Falls farm home on November 1. Sheriff deputy Edward Neuman of Eldorado County California quoted Mark’s postcrime interview about a motorcycle trip before the Cedar Falls killings. Mark claimed no farther east than Chappell Ned, but witnesses placed him driving into town on October 31.

Italians vote in record numbers amid postwar race

Italians cast ballots in a high turnout contest between the Christian Democrats and the Communists. Early Senate returns showed a neck-and-neck race with one poll predicting a CD victory and another a Communist edge, while the Chamber of Deputies vote counted later. The Senate turnout favored voters 25 and older, and predictions favored a more conservative Senate result than the Chamber.

Pilots in Canada Return Order Amid Strike Disruption

Canadian air traffic faced a second day of disruption as courts ordered Air Canada pilots to return to work. The majority did not respond, forcing Airport Control Centers in Toronto and other cities to shut down. An injunction required 2800 pilots to resume duties at least until Thursday as hearings continue.

Charity horse show draws crowds at Washington County Fairgrounds

The Sunday charity horse show for the Washington County Developmental Center raised about $2,000. Horses from Ottumwa Amana Bloomfield Center Point Cedar Rapids and other communities competed. Judy Herr played organ, Milver Horn led the ring as judge, Chuck Hotle announced, and Mrs Ernie Lund won and sold the quarter horse for 420 to Norman Hoover. The Washington Kiwanis A M'ers ran the refreshment stand.

Washington driver injured in one car crash on North 12th

A 51 year old Washington man was treated for minor head injuries after his car left the roadway on North 12th Avenue struck a tree and damaged a lawn. Police say he could not recall the crash. No charges filed.

Rapp calls for 12 year limit on Congress terms

Waterloo attorney Stephen Rapp a Democratic candidate for Iowa 3rd District urged a 12-year cap on both representatives and senators to curb power and privilege. He argued limits would force lawmakers to face the real world and proposed cutting back on legislative benefits to curb misuse of public funds.
