Secret Reports Seek Court Ban on War Stories
United Press International reports two court-driven efforts to bar publications of a 7,000 page Indochina war report. The Washington Post won a district court ruling that the First Amendment overrides government claims of national security, but appeals courts ordered a halt pending panel review. The Times faced similar restraints as higher courts weigh national security against press freedom with Supreme Court expectations high.
