Harcourt voters approved a town water works project with an initial expenditure of 12000 dollars. The vote was 20 to 52 in favor after two prior defeats of the proposal.
Harlan-Nick Altman, a Shelby county farmer, recovered a 17 jewel watch lost fifteen years ago while cultivating corn. The watch still runs.
Orval Frazier six at his farm home southeast of Knoxville found a dynamite cap and struck it with a hammer. He was taken to a Knoxville hospital in danger of losing his left hand. Two fingers have already been amputated. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Fred Frazier.
Dan Cerney, 30, of Cedar Rapids, suffered severe burns when a car gas tank exploded at Central City. He reportedly tried to inspect the tank with a lantern, then rolled in sand to extinguish flames on his clothing.
Mrs. Horace Custer, 73, of near Altoona, was seriously injured when a ram charged from a sheep lot as she walked toward the house. She was knocked down, trampled, and found unconscious by her husband. She suffered a broken leg and possible internal injuries with multiple cuts and bruises.
Dr. W. G. Doran of Milwaukee returned to Keokuk Medical College to address alumni about a proposed leukemia treatment. He says tests since 1902 isolated the disease-causing organism and notes a 1902 student paper claiming leukemia is a germ disease.
The Aber deen Angus cow Magicketa Epponia CC B ll sold near here for 3500 dollars, a likely auction record. It was part of the dispersed Congdon Battles herd. Ep ponia went to Mrs H Hamilton Hackney of Pink sburg Maryland. The 144 head brought 65345 dollars. Governor Kraschel spoke to about 8000 attendees from 80 states. Fr BB Mullen, Canada minister of agriculture, was among bidders.
Des Moines city council discussed a policy against issuing beer licenses to establishments where gasoline and oil constitute the major part of business. Finance Commissioner L. P. Love urged that patrons stop for gas and then buy beer, and he opposed issuing such licenses.
The Baldwin-Patterson post of Des Moines proposes a resolution at the Iowa district American Legion conference asking Congress to place all military and semi military camps under War Department control. If passed, camps like the German American Bund would be supervised by state adjutant generals. Joseph F. Walah said the measure will also be presented at the state convention in Davenport in August.
Iowa begins unemployment compensation under a federal act on July 1 joining Michigan and South Carolina. About 50,000 of roughly 300,000 covered workers are expected to file in July with initial weekly benefits around $10. First checks likely the last week of July after a two week waiting period.
Miss Gladys Earl leads a county program to find hidden TB cases focusing on close contacts of known patients. Examinations, tuberculin skin tests, and chest X rays will be arranged through family physicians with state and local funding support and cooperation from the medical society and Christmas seal committee.
Suspected in the coal mine death of Alva Carder fifty Ottumwa operator Chris Norton was jailed without bond pending ballistic tests by the state bureau of investigation. Norton admitted a past feud but denied it caused the shooting. no charges yet filed. Prosecutors seek to match 32 calibre bullets from Carder to a pistol found at Norton's home.
At the Washington city council meeting seven license applications to sell beer were received for the new licensing year beginning July 1. Applicants include Frank L. Casey Hugh A. Dougall Leo Nardy Cantoni Cantoni Mrs Edith Beatty Charles M Denison and Harvey & Warfel. Action awaits a report from an investigating committee. Mayor Lytle urged stricter peddler licensing with solicitor Bailey to draft an ordinance.
Miss Ethel Grecian, county auditor, lists men nominated in the recent primary for township offices such as trustees clerks assessors and occasional justice of the peace and constable. Names confirmed after county board official vote count by townships include Brighton and Cedar candidates with party designations and term details.
The Iowa Supreme Court ruled the entire 375000 estate of the late Henry Iwers to Cedar county farmer Louis Voss and Mary Voss. The decision upheld the Cedar county district court verdict that the will was genuine, denying 32 relatives the chance to break it. The day’s opinions also included a tax ruling on funeral goods.
About 190 West Liberty residents in 31 cars stopped in Washington for a noon meal and lively entertainments by a Little German band and local high school singers. The group promotes West Liberty’s centennial celebration set for June 24 and planned travel to several towns this afternoon. Mrs. W. H. Wells of Des Moines and her son Bobby Wells, visiting daughters in Washington, joined the event.
Des Moines report shows 215 of every 1,000 Iowa residents received old age benefits in March, ranking Iowa ninth among nine Midwest states. Kansas led with 120 per 1,000, while Indiana 147 and Wisconsin 181 trailed Iowa in the region.
A large 4 by 60 foot barn and adjoining corn crib burned this morning on the Albert Donovan farm a mile northeast of town. Floyd Olds resides there. Fire blamed on children with matches. Hay corn and hay-loader destroyed. Donovan insured on the building with Washington County Farmers Mutual. contents uninsured. Farmers Mutual fire truck arrived but could not stop the blaze.
The Washington Hustlers 4-H Club met at Robert Macon’s home with seven members and two guests. Alvin Lueder led livestock judging as the main feature and refreshments followed the session.

The Mt Pleasant Municipal band of forty five under Chester Morgan will give a regular weekly concert in Central Park this Wednesday. Returns from 2017 of 3729 precincts show Elmer Benson leading Hjalmar Peterson by 117,197 to 115,805 as results pour in from Duluth and Range areas. Observers expect Benson to lose by about 20,000 despite endorsements from labor and Roosevelt supporters.
Ila Hiltunen from Greybull Wyoming arrives in Washington to replace Mabel Olson as maternity nurse at the county health unit. A University of Iowa nursing graduate, she has done graduate public health work at the University of Washington since June.
Washington city leaders led by Chief Jay Brown, Mayor Lloyd Lytle, and the city council seek to audit revolvers and rifles issued in 1930 to a vigilante group formed to curb bank robberies. Guns may be returned for reissue, with Brown wishing to keep a couple at the police room for emergencies.
