Newton Iowa youth Darwin SENTER age 17 suffered a fractured neck after diving into shallow Skunk River west of Colfax while swimming with companions. He was transported by ambulance to University Hospital at Iowa City for treatment.
The Baldwin Patterson American Legion Post proposes a resolution urging Congress to place all military and semi military camps in the United States under War Department control. Camps would be supervised directly by state adjutant generals where located.
Elk Horn officials apply for a Public Works Administration grant and loan totaling 28000 dollars to build a water system for a town with a population over 600. The town currently lacks any public water service and aims to supply residents.

The 18th Iowa department Veterans Foreign Wars encampment opened Sunday at Cedar Rapids with registration at the Montrose hotel. A 2:30 council meeting and 6:30 officers banquet for about 150 officers post commanders and auxiliary presidents followed. The memorial services at the Coliseum featured J C Fellers and national commander in chief S P Squyres. Attendees from Washington included Mr and Mrs ER Burbam Mr and Mrs Harold Blair and others.
Five youths from the Washington Church of Christ and three from the Pleasant Hill Church set out yesterday for Fairfield to attend a young people’s conference, planning to stay through Saturday. The group from the Washington church includes several named attendees while the Pleasant Hill delegation joins them for the event.
Funeral services for Seth Carris 64 will be held Tuesday at 10 36 AM at the B L Sanders residence in Keota with Rev Verne Butler. Burial in Keota cemetery. Carris died Sunday by inhaling gas at 904 North Iowa Ave Washington IA. He left a note and his family was away in Dubuque. Survived by wife two sons Lawrence and Glenn five daughters Mabel Claire Catherine and Floyd Maule. He was a Knights of Pythias member.

A group from Washington church with Wilma Richards Bonnie West Pearl Lyman Helen and Hazel Simering and Pleasant Hill church members Marjorie Margaret Chalupa Laurence Kephart were driven by Rev Vernon Carter and Laurence Kephart. Carter left before the service, part of three summer events to be held in Boone and at Tabor College in Tabor.
The P. G. Ahrens house on South Iowa Avenue near the square has undergone major exterior upgrades. Weather-boarding was replaced with gray asbestos cement shingles and the property received fresh painting, enhancing its stature as one of the town’s finest homes.

Mrs. O. F. Laubach died Sunday morning at 10 45 at the county hospital after a year of declining health. She lived at 621 West Madison Street and had been bedfast four weeks. Funeral services will be at 2 30 Tuesday in the Washington Methodist church, conducted by Dr. Arthur Atack and Rev. A W MacBlain. Burial is in Keota cemetery. She was born August 18 1875 in Augusta Illinois and married Oscar Franklin Laubach August 30 1902. Survivors include her husband three children Daniel of Geneseo Lester and Rebecca at home and two grandchildren.
Secretary of Agriculture Curran reports a 9.4 percent rise in radio receiving sets on farms in 1937. In Iowa, Washington County shows 68.6 percent and Henry County 66.6 percent, indicating growing radio use among farmers.
