Guerrilla forces breached Hue district headquarters from three directions near dawn injuring the district chief and 10 aides, blowing up nearby buildings within five blocks of the U.S. military HQ. A 50-strong Communist unit also attacked a Marine artillery emplacement but was repulsed. At Chu Lai a skirmish left at least 14 guerrillas dead amid hazardous material on their backs. Coast Guard cutters engaged a Communist ship 80 miles SW of Saigon, forcing it aground after a three hour battle alongside helicopter gunships and additional support.
