Nearly seventy Washington area men and boys left the Iowa armory on June 20, 1916 to join The First Iowa Company K on President Wilson's call for National Guard troops. The action followed Pancho Villa raids and amid German intrigue, as Wilson mobilized forces to protect life and property on the Rio Grande front. Everett Burham recalls the dawn goodbye and border service that followed.

Father James E. Grubb, assistant pastor at St. James in Washington for eleven years, will transfer to St. Anthony's in Davenport on July 1 to assist Msgr. Paul Moore. He was born in Oskaloosa and raised in Des Moines. Reverend William Stratman will replace him at St. James. An open house honoring Grubb’s service will be held Sunday at the school hall.

City hearing set on proposed model subdivision ordinance
Washington City Council, after hearing Powers and Associates, set July 5 at 8:00 p.m. for a public hearing on a new model subdivision ordinance governing new subdivisions with sewer paving sidewalks and lights. The council also approved a $43,168.61 contract for Osborn Asphalt Paving Co. for summer street work and authorized purchase of a fogging machine for $345. New cigarette permits were issued to 31 merchants, and an alley vacating hearing was scheduled for July 18. A minutes correction changed the service call fee to be paid to the city and employees via remittance.
