A youth from Onawa and Whiting spotted an empty white wooden child’s coffin drifting in the Little Sioux River near Kennebec. Sheriff S N Anderson of Monons county is investigating the peculiar discovery.
Rescuers freed Harold Hughes and Paul King after a 25 ton salt fall trapped them in a basement at Waggoner Produce Co. The workers were pinned for 45 minutes but escaped with only minor injuries.
In a Mississippi river town McGregor crowds gathered as the Chief Blackhawk, the first passenger steamer on the upper Mississippi in years, pulled away from the levee on its maiden trip. A bench played while onshore spectators waved bon voyage, marking a lively revival of historic river travel.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt sends a formal regret for being unable to attend the Britt hobo convention set for August 22. A letter from secretary Marvin McIntyre to David King of hobos confirms the White House notice. Beetison of Ashland, Nebraska, was elected as hobos’ exalted leader last year.
Federal agents charged Dr Cyrillus Wirth, 69, Bottendorf physician, with selling narcotics after he allegedly sold morphine to an agent. Bond set at $2,000. Preliminary hearing scheduled for June 2.
Des Moines liquor stores plan to bar sales to direct relief clients and will not issue 1938-39 permits to those known as relief recipients. Chairman Bernard Manley notes most shops have not received relief client lists yet from county relief headquarters to dispatch to stores.
Des Moines reports the employment insurance commission will impose a 96 percent penalty on employers who fail to pay delinquent 1946 unemployment compensation taxes by July 26. The penalty also withholds the federal unemployment credit the state tax credit normally earns.
Narinda-Earl McClain aged 60 was killed five miles north of Coin when a tractor he started while haying rolled downhill in high gear. He left the vehicle running while away, then returned to crank it and was crushed by a rear wheel. A witness reported the accident.
Iowa City reports a theory that two bandits who robbed the North English bank of 905 dollars hid in a cemetery seven miles east of Williamsburg. Sheriff Engleburt notified officers that Paul Frazier of Williamsburg will be brought to Iowa City to help identify a suspect arrested yesterday.
James Madison McGuire, 78, died late yesterday at his Cotter home. Funeral services set for 2 pm tomorrow at the Ainsworth Methodist church with interment in Ainsworth Cemetery. Born Sept 22, 1859 in Monroe County Tennessee, he moved to the area at age ten and farmed locally. Rev. Bellows to lead the service.
Mrs. J. M. Wishart, her daughter Josephine and son Joln of Carnegie Pennsylvania are visiting Washington for several days with friends. They lodge at the home of Dr. and Mrs. CC McLaughtin. Rev J. M. Wishart formerly served as minister at the United Presbyterian church in Washington.
Nearly six hundred boys from Iowa’s American Legion boy state camp will assume control of the capitol for a day at Camp Dodge. Max Paige of Waterloo serves as governor with a cabinet and lawmakers in both chambers. Laws are nonbinding except among the participants as a citizenship training exercise.
A Cotter resident dies after a long career in Washington and Louisa counties. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Richardson whom he married years ago. His five sons Glenn Jesse Harve Hilton Homer and one daughter Mrs Wayne Helman also survive along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Republicans and Democrats filed expense affidavits after the primary. Fred Bourgeois of Kalona led spending with 58.63 for printing and gas. Other unopposed candidates like Sheriff H M Putnam, Harriet Coulter, Richard A Stewart, and R N Noonan spent small amounts for announcements. Democrat Wilbert Rose spent 10.42, Emma Richardson had no expenses.

Miss Ethel Greeian county auditor announced new delegates for the Republican county convention July 2. Added to Clay district are Mrs.Grant Horton and H.D.Luers. to West Chester are Mr.and Mrs.H.W.Luers and B.E.F.Bauer. J.C.Huston and Mrs.George Yeager are verified as Republican committeeman and committeewoman for Crawford township.

Dennis Bush 82 died this morning in Kansas City after living on a farm north of Washington. Funeral services set for 10:30 Monday at L A Jones Funeral Home with Dr Arthur Ateck of the Methodist church officiating. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery beside his first wife Ellen Varney. He was born September 1 1866 and had lived in Texas and Excelsior Springs before moving to Kansas City.

The Trace Mountain giant white oak near Williamson in Mingo County, long claimed as one of the world’s largest and 650 years old, failed to leaf this spring. Island Creek Coal Company official A. W. Lee declared it dead after tests. The tree stood 146 feet tall with a 30 foot girth, had branches over 90 feet, and yielded more than 177000 feet of lumber weighing over 120000 pounds.
