West Chester’s Early Growth and Land Marks 1872

West Chester began as prairie with log cabins. Ed Clemens sold land to railroad backers who planned a railroad town in 1872, placing a depot and post office run by George James. The town was named Chester then West Chester in 1873 after a competitor’s Chester Iowa appeared. The era saw early buildings including an elevator, general store, hotel, drug store, restaurant, lumber yard, and the first homes built in 1873. Churches, a school, a cheese factory from 1886 to 1906, and a consolidated school followed, with about 55 residences and several key facilities by the turn of the century. Notable locals include J James Daniele, age 96 in 1920s, and Ida V. Hough.
