Celebration Plans Near Completion for Wayland Washington Road

Rev Klein listed on program as speaker for the Washington Wayland road completion celebration to be held in Wayland Tuesday evening. Washington Municipal band and Wayland band to perform with free dancing after the program. Fred Downing’s public address system to project the event to thousands. Mayor O P Boshart and Jake Roth to speak. Wayland contributions include local musical numbers and other items pending finalization. Oil on streets improved by recent rains, not expected to hinder Tuesday night events.

Iowa Tops Nation in Meat Production Says Board

A column notes Iowa is the nation’s leading meat producing state per findings from the National Livestock and Meat Board annual meeting. It lists the five top states for steaks chops and roasts as Iowa Nebraska Illinois Missouri and Montana in order. The 13 central states account for 69 percent of the supply.

Sioux City youth escapes Iowa training school again

Tony Prechelo 16, of Sioux City Iowa, escaped from the Iowa state training school here with a butcher knife. It marks his second escape from the facility and triggered a Thursday night manhunt by authorities.

A countywide lamb show and lamb exhibit were held in Sigourney today with Tex Beresford and W. McDonald from Iowa State College judging the lambs. The event featured music and speeches.

Ames Man Dies After Fall From Freight Car

Cleo tewhs 25 of Ames Indiana died at an Iowa sanitarium from injuries after falling between moving freight cars in the Northwestern yards Wednesday afternoon. His arms were severed. Frances Ellingsworth of Corydon Illinois was elected president of the 4 H girls of Iowa at a statewide meeting held in the Iowa State College gymnasium attended by about 1700 4 H girls and leaders.

Four Men Jailed After Beer Party in Davenport

Four men arrested by Davenport police charged with arranging a beer party involving four girl inmates of the Town Soldiers' Orphans home faced 30 days in jail. Police Chief John A Horntys announced the sentencing.

William Ganges a Charles City resident of 72 years celebrated his one hundredth birthday anniversary on Thursday. He is one of two remaining Civil War veterans in Floyd County.

Desperadoes Kill Officers Near Alrion

Near June 18 Sheriff Lawrence Smowyer aged 33 and Constable Willian Wathen were shot by two desperadoes 18 miles northwest of Alrion. The sheriff died before a posse reached the scene. the constable was alive but badly wounded and later died at a hospital.

County Officers Attend Convention in Davenport

Officials crowded the court house main floor as the state county officers meet in Davenport. County auditor Miers Ethel Greeian was elected secretary treasurer of the auditors section. The gathering marks the first Davenport stop in several years with next year planned for Stony City.

Centenary Service at Site of Early Methodist Church

Crawfordsville celebrates the centennial of its Methodist society with a Sunday service at the Matthew Moorhead cabin site three and a half miles south of town on Highway 146. Bogus Check Suspect Apprehended in Fort Dodge

Sheriff H. M. Putnam took into custody a man from Fort Dodge wanted here for cashing a bad check. He allegedly signed nine $5 checks payable to Mrs Edith Beatty without funds, and confessed he had no money to cover the checks.

Street Repairs Voted for Maintenance and New Fire Truck

The Washington city council approved street resurfacing on six miles of pavement using hot asphalt this summer and authorized about 1200 dollars for the project. The fire, water and light committee was directed to buy a new fire truck to replace the city’s first model, improving firefighting capacity with two serviceable engines.

Insane hospital contract let for new Me Peasant building

Des Moines reports bids were unusually low for the Me Peasant insane hospital project. The state board awarded the four story building with stone facing and metal doors to C. C. Larson Co. of Council Bluffs for 288 087, with J W Darragh handling plumbing and heating and Robertson Electric securing wiring. Completion targeted by next May. An furnishing contract valued around 80 000 will be awarded next winter after the old hospital burned last August.

Dr Arthur Atack of the Methodist Church and Leigh W Soule of the Y M C A gave talks at a celebratory program in the A M E church. Special Legion Meeting Monday for Beatty Post

A special Leon Beatty post American Legion meeting is set for Monday evening to plan the membership drive. The post faces competition from Le Mars and from Farmer’s Mutual truck space at the fire station may be used if needed. Members on the fire water light and street alley committees include councilmen W B Dupuis Fred Reid and Lester Orr with Dr Reid as chairman. Cemetery Road council members hope to contract for the Elm Grove cemetery road from Iowa avenue south end, sharing costs with Washington county if federal aid lags.

Wellman Legion Meet Draws 250 Attendees

The Wellman county Legion gathering drew about 250 people including Legion members, Auxiliary members, and families. Frank Miles of Des Moines spoke opposing Governor Kraschel, with other remarks from Lew Clark and Mrs. McGarry. The event at Oakwood pavilion featured songs, dance, and a social reception.
