Davenport resident Howard Johannsen told Police Judge John A. Hornby he sped because his wife overslept and he was late for work. He joked that he would fine his wife the same amount, and the judge imposed a 3 fine.
More than 400 Sea Scouts are expected for a four day regatta on Lake Cooper starting June 22. Scouts come from Wyoming Colorado Nebraska Kansas Iowa and Missouri. About 70 boats will participate with National Sea Scout Commodore Howard F. Gillette of Chicago as an honored guest.
Ben Cason, 47, went to the post office to certify soldier bonus bonds but faced a deputy sheriff escort to ensure his return to Woodbury jail. His wife had him jailed recently for disturbing the peace.
Mrs Sarah C Johnson of Sioux City lost her left eye after a carbonated beverage bottle exploded. She was sweeping a sandwich shop floor when her broom struck the bottle, causing the blast and glass fragments to strike her eyes.

Ames and Iowa State College will host a double convention on June 19 20 and 21 with the Iowa State Blacksmiths and Welders Association and the National Association meeting. Mayor W L Allen predicts over 200 attendees from several states for the 8 day session. The national group holds its 35th convention and the state 9th.
Mrs Christine Kolasch, 78, who settled in Humboldt in 1898 and died recently, left 103 descendants including eleven children four grandchildren and 36 great great grandchildren.
Alvin K. Jones, a Knoxville area farmer, bought a sow for 45 cents with a rural resettlement loan for feed after a 4H pork venture paid $200 this spring. The sow produced 11 piglets sold for $209, with Jones also raising chickens and cattle now yielding about $5 weekly, signaling improved mood and prospects.

Harold J. Wilson appealing a $25 fine for failing to stop argues the State highway commission lacks authority to erect stop signs on arterial highways. Lew Wallace commented on the test reaching the Iowa Supreme Court.

The Barnes family Wayne two and Louise seven move to Washington joining a business family. Mrs Barnes Mable Whittaker is daughter of Harry and Whittaker. Mr Barnes takes half interest in the Whittaker business. The City Feed Yard is a longstanding district fixture. The couple arrived from Pasadena California and reside at 602 South 3rd Avenue.
Philadelphia buzzes as Democratic leaders including James Farley and Senator Robert Wagner plan to arrive for the Roosevelt Garner nomination week. City officials anticipate extended events with Garner’s appearance and convention preparations under tight party control while rival Republicans stage in Cleveland.
In Des Moines on June 19 an estimated 6000 trades union workers called off a general strike pending wage and workload negotiations on WPA projects. A five member committee was appointed to press for union pay and labor on WPA sites, repeating a prior unsuccessful campaign led by John C. Lewis. Ira Lane, chair, stated unanimous demand for strike action if changes fail.
Des Moines officials report heavy trucks may be taxed to cover wear on city paving along major highways. The League of Iowa Municipalities will seek legislative action after a meeting led by Waterloo council members. A ten mile truck tax was proposed previously but not enacted. A new bill would push for more state aid to maintain and rebuild the primary road extensions. Members include Durick, Burgess, Darling, Garlock, Allen, Walter, and chambers of commerce representatives Warner, Bond, Tackaberry, Reynolds, and Crum.
In Council Bluffs on June 19 Allen Wheaton nineteen year old ex convict pleaded guilty to first degree murder in the slaying of Henry Plummer an oil station attendant A judge will hear on July 6 whether Wheaton faces the gallows or life in prison as punishment for the crime.

Thirteen Lubec children drowned when a motor boat overturned during a picnic on a lake near East Machias Maine authorities investigated the tragic accident.

The Senate approves a new ship subsidy bill backed by President Roosevelt. It seeks parity with foreign shipping, allows subsidies for construction, Americanizes crews on U S flag vessels, and creates a five member maritime commission. The measure targets an $800 million price tag and may advance to adjournment by Saturday night.
Frank Russe of Riverside will be buried after funeral services Saturday at 9 AM at Sherman’s funeral home. Rev. Vernon H. Carter of the Christian church will conduct the rites. A brother and two sisters arrived to finalize plans for the service and burial.

Thomas D Adams 64 prominent Wellman businessman died at his home after years of illness. Born July 31 1871 in Lexington he married Nellie Miller in 1899 and lived on a farm before moving to Wellman in 1996. Survived by widow son Keith two sisters and three brothers with funeral Saturday at 2 50 pm at home.
Pierce Knox, a 14 year old blind xylophonist, will perform at a Chicago Rotary luncheon next Tuesday. Sponsored by the Rotary club of Washington Iowa, he won first prize at the national high school music contest in Cleveland. He notes a warm reception in Kewanee and Pekin on recent Rotary club visits.
Hankow China June 19 dispatches report civil war erupted as southern forces from Kwangsi province about 200000 strong moved north against Nanking armies and Kweichow Hunan forces. Kwangsi and Kwangtun troops crossed into Kiangsu and occupied Chang and Anyuan while clashes near Heng Chow remained unclear.
Seamen from the Marseilles Freemen's Union, about 8 000 strong, threaten to seize all ships in the harbor if pay and hour demands are not met by Monday. They warn of occupying both foreign and French vessels, marking international repercussions in three weeks of French strikes.
The Washington Municipal band and Mt Pleasant Municipal band plan an exchange of concerts. Washington performs June 24 in Mt Pleasant under M A McKay. Mt Pleasant returns July 25 in Washington led by Edward Smith. Each band size is listed as 8 and 50 players respectively.
