Hol lie Kelly a 14 year old from Cedar Rapids swam out into the Cedar river to rescue a small boy from a drifting rowboat. He brought the boy ashore and the rescued lad went home with no name learned.
Two Cedar Falls residents, Mr and Mrs C Watk ers, are hospitalized in Sartari after a Parkersburg train auto collision. A shirt hung over a car window blocked the driver’s view, causing the crash. The pair report broken bones shock and possible internal injuries.
OsKaloosa mayor and police chief backed off tax plans but issued curfew and safety rules after a mass meeting with young bicyclists. The group delivered an anti tax petition with about 2 000 names. Rules include stopping at signs, avoiding bikes in parks and sidewalks, and limiting night riding on Saturdays.
In Manchester two men James Murphy age 29 from Rockford Illinois and Eddie Martin age 53 from Fox Lake Wisconsin are jailed for allegedly reviving an alcohol runner racket. They approached farmers claiming a collision left their truck and driver stranded and demanded $100 to avoid police reports. They offered a watch as security and promised repayment with small interest but never returned.
Des Moines Secretary of Agriculture Ray Murray was asked by the Egyptian government to help locate an effective treatment for the cotton leaf worm. The Egyptian Royal Society of Agriculture posts a prize of 20,000 pounds about 100000 dollars for a workable remedy, with Murray referring the inquiry to Iowa State College scientists.
DES MOINES members of the American Rose Society prepare to host the annual convention at Hotel Savery on June 26, 1936. New rose varieties will be shown and more than $100 in cash premiums are offered for the best collection of new hybrid tea roses and for the best collection of roses originated by the exhibitor from any hardy stock.
TRAER Mrs Helen Parson 85 of Chicago visited her twin sister Mrs Ella Kinner 85 in Traer. They are believed the oldest set of twins in the United States.
Ralph Pratt of the State theater was a young part owner of a Winfield cigar factory. His background makes him a keen judge of good tobacco.
Wharton Texas June 18 A mob flare over the fatal stabbing of Officer Tim Simmons by a crowd of negroes subsides. In El Campo a cafe was set afire in retaliation as earlier violence spread to Macon and Matagorda counties. Six negro men and three women were jailed in Wharton while a mob headed for the jail. Sheriff Koehler moved the prisoners to Bay City to avert trouble.
Pierce Knox, a blind 16 year old xyophone player from Washington Iowa, entertained Kewanee Rotary members with several selections including a challenging interpretation of THOME Sweet Home His accompanist was F L Hallin He travels east for an audition before Major Bowes and will perform in Galesburg today and Peoria tomorrow.
Businesses urged to arrange immediate cleaning of American flags and a special Centennial flag to fly during the centennial celebration. Flags will be displayed in front of places of business throughout the week.
Members of the Iowa State Hardware men's association will hold a one day convention at the West Okoboji Golf and Country club on June 26. Seventy five hardware dealers from all parts of Iowa are expected to attend the session.

Miserate Davis 56 died at her Crawfordsville home Wednesday night after a long illness dating to October. Survived by brothers Evan and Hugh and sister Lydia, with two deceased siblings. Funeral Friday at 1:30 at home and 2 at Salem church conducted by Rev. D. Davies. Burial in Cambrian cemetery.
Miss Ida May Stevenson from Rockwell arrived yesterday to spend a few weeks with her sister, Mrs. Sarah Helwick.
A well dressed man identified as Albert Master Jr of New York confessed at San Francisco police headquarters to the murder and criminal assault of Blanche Cousins of Idaho Falls Idaho. He led officers to an apartment where the victim lay with a stocking tied around her neck. the crime occurred Tuesday night.
A Centennial celebration will feature an amateur contest on July 4 on the public square with $30 in cash prizes. Mrs. R Phillips is chairs man. Applications and audition times are published and due by July 1 at 4 PM and 7:30 PM at the Y.M.C.A. auditions occur Wednesday.
Centerville report: Hugh Steel 61 of Cincinnati Iowa died after four days with a broken neck from being struck by a car. His death marks Iowa's 181st automobile fatality this year.
Moscow reports the death of Maxim Gorki, renowned Russian novelist and playwright, at age 67. The influential author Leadpages: Gorki’s passing marks the end of a major literary era in Russia.
Allison Fd Hevenga, a farmer near here, shows a corn growth five and a half feet high. Ten rows in his field measure the height, with the crop planted on April 29.

Riverside 53 year old Frank Russe took his own life in the county jail at about 6 30 this morning by slashing his throat with a broken knife while awaiting a burglary charge alongside intoxication penalties. He had been kept in a separate upstairs cell and no inquest will be held.
The Fortnightly club awards two prizes at the Centennial Celebration on July 4. The top club or section with the largest percentage in pioneer costume will receive ten dollars if its membership is fifteen or more, and five dollars for smaller groups. The change aims to balance larger and smaller memberships.

A Riverside resident admitted guilt and pledged to plead guilty. He appeared before Justice J. E Boyee, who bound him over to district court. Unmarried, he lived most of his life in Riverside and left surviving a sister Mrs Ed Kibert of Iowa City and a brother Joe Russe of Gibson Iowa, plus two other sisters. The body was taken to Sherman’s funeral home with funeral arrangements pending. Plan for services will await contact with siblings.
The Legion Auxiliary agreed to design the official Washington county Centennial flag to be unfurled at the opening day ceremonial Tuesday June 30 under the American flag. A splendid design is planned and presented at the ceremony.
Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee yesterday evening sentenced J. D. Snyder of Fort Madison to pay a $100 fine after pleading guilty to reckless driving. Snyder was picked up near Washington by state highway patrolman James Gildroy of Iowa City.

In Kent Ohio on June 18 open warfare erupted outside the Black & Decker plant injuring at least six people as strikers fought with strike breakers. The plant requested National Guard assistance to restore order while deputies prepared to remove break-ins after a tentative peace.
Announcement in Iowa City states Wayne C. Brown, formerly of Washington, is named manager of the Firestone Auto Supply and Service store in Iowa City. A 1935 University of Iowa commerce graduate, Brown trained in sales in Akron and has worked in the Chicago division before the transfer.
A fire at a Boone coal mine caused about 10000 dollars in damage. The tipple and all above ground works were destroyed and the shaft may be abandoned due to underground timber damage and a burned cavern.
New York June 18. Charles Luciano reputed head of the giant vice racket here was sentenced to serve 26 to 50 years for compulsory prostitution.
E. RR. Norton and Edwin Hartman pleaded guilty to bootlegging and were sentenced to four months each in Washington county jail. They entered guilty pleas before Judge Frank Bechly in Montezuma and were later taken to Bechly's hometown by Sheriff Harold M. Putnam and County Attorney George F. Morrison.
