Landon’s rise from Kansas governor to national figure begins

In 1931 Alfred Landon sought Kansas governor to unite the party and satisfy grass roots demand. He toured the state, balanced the budget, cut taxes and built a war chest of public opinion. By 1935 his cautious but steady record and word of mouth propelled a nationwide bid with growing popularity. His modest campaign kept speeches few while press and public built broad support across states.
