American Legion members in Ottumwa completed a boat house in one day as a community project for the Boy Scout camp on Lake Wapello. The structure will be dedicated next month near the lake site.
Des Moines reports say Governor Herring, returning from Washington, D. C, expressed pleasure at Landon's nomination but doubted Landon could defeat Roosevelt. He commented on the Republican candidate’s prospects while in Des Moines.
DECORAH Peter Surley aged 45 a farmer died when his tractor turned over and crushed him beneath it at his farm authorities said the accident occurred late Tuesday and the body was removed to the county morgue.
United Air Lines official Ralph A. Reed announced the planned inauguration within a week at the Cedar Rapids port after an inspection. Dao Hunter will continue to run the Cedar Rapids airport.
Atlantic witnesses report a bolt from a lightning strike hit a radio tower then shot across the street to strike a baseline tank pump. The 15000 gallon tank owned by Henningsen Motor Co. was about one third full and the strike tore paving for about 20 feet, narrowly avoiding a larger explosion.
A Chinese girl student from Sioux Falls South Dakota spoke at a Lawyers Chautauqua in Milford last weekend. She studied under Mrs W. Pitts wife of Judge Pitts of Le Mars when Mrs Pitts worked with the YWCA in China.
A 200 by 80 foot log raft carrying 75 000 board feet of cottonwood and elm headed to the Burlington Basket Co factory from Bellevue passes Rock Island lock. B A Plorang, company president, notes it is the first scarce raft of logs to reach the docks in commercial shipment. The tale recalls how log rafts once shaped river life for Mississippi Valley youth.
The Iowa Conference of Social Workers legislative committee and the Iowa AASW executive committee met in Grinnell. They discussed public welfare legislation in Iowa and its relation to the national Social Security Act and planned further local welfare legislation in town to conform with the act.
Sixteen white faced steers escaped after a trailer overturn in downtown Sioux City. Volunteer cowboys assisted until trucker Karl Sluka of Kimball drove the cattle two miles to a stockyards pen, roving main streets and busy thoroughfares along the route to the yards.
Albert Franklin Johnson and Bertha French Johnson, co directors, will start work this week on three plays for the summer drama season at Cornell college in Mount Vernon. The season will climax with the Carnival of Comedy on July 9 10 and 11.

A general strike shut down many Belgian industries with 200000 workers quitting work. Coal mines saw 160000 miners and 30000 metal workers striking, as gendarmes were posted in mining towns to keep miners from entering the territory. The action follows owners’ refusal of a 40 hour week higher wages paid vacations and a minimum underground wage of 73 cents.
The Y P C presbyterial conventions convene Tuesday and Wednesday at the United Presbyterian Church in Ainsworth. Local attendees plan to join. The program opens at 10 a m Tuesday with a Bible reading contest at 2 p m and a banquet at 5 45 p m. Monmouth College President J H Grier speaks at 8 p m Tuesday as morning and afternoon sessions continue Wednesday.
Soren Anderson, a wealthy Iowa farmer, and his pet dog were killed by a lightning bolt during a severe electrical storm. The bodies were found early today after his sister-in-law reported he did not return for supper and a search began.
DPD reports retirement electrical engineer and noted inventor Farland Moore aged 67 was found shot to death in the rear yard of his Orange New Jersey home early today.
Mr and Mrs Frank Koo departed yesterday for Fort Worth Texas to attend the Texas Centennial event and celebrate the state's history with other guests and ceremonies.
Cedar Falls dentist Dr. V. M. Gregg has crafted a gavel from 48 wood pieces representing all 48 states. It will be sent to Dr. F. K. Townsend to call the Townsend convention to order in Cleveland on July 15, following last year’s souvenir theft of a similar gavel.
About 150 members of the Old Order River Brethren ended a two day love feast on the J. D Keller farm two miles east of Dallas Center. Brethren traveled from Ohio and Pennsylvania to join Dallas Center members, with attendees from the Brethren in Christ branch.
James Lemon, designer of individual ring mountings, told police a topaz ring valued at 350 dollars and a moas agate ring worth 12 dollars were stolen from his Otumwa shop while open to customers. Both rings were handmade and reportedly had no duplicates. A copyright had been applied for protecting the design.
Ernie Ro Norton and Edwin Hartman were charged by Sheriff Harold M. Putnam with bootlegging after a raid on Norton's home found nine pints of Old Longwood whiskey with Illinois seals. Hartman was held to the district court under a $200 bond. Frank Rossi of Riverside began a five day jail term for intoxication by order of Mayor William Kunebel.
Des Moines June 15 An official report shows 14 952 family heads representing 68 892 individuals and 1684 single persons on Iowa relief rolls for May down from 19 011 family heads 88 054 individuals and 1820 singles in April. Project employment rose largely seasonal while WPA farm and agricultural work declined.
Local residents report weekend visits among Crone and Rees families in Kalona and Washington. Miss Hazel Clark stayed with Miss Elizabeth Rees O at BK. Maddox of Muscatine visited on business. International Harvester employees gathered for a company picnic at Credit Island Davenport with an 800 pound beef barbecue. Mrs Tucker of Warre repeated weekend with her daughter Mrs Daw son.
Six bands will perform during the countywide Centennial celebration from June 29 to July 4. The lineup includes the Lou-peice county band opening on June 30 at 10:00, with Wellman, Brighton, Kitona, Riverside, and the 38 member Washington Municipal Band also featured along with free acts. Ed Carris will bring Ed's Old Time Fiddlers for popular regional music.
Pierce Knox blind xylophone player leaves Tuesday with his father for a Rotary club tour across Illinois and Indiana. The Washington Rotary sponsors stops in Kewanee Pekin Galesburg and other cities with potential audition in New York Bowes amateur hour. Knox is a noted musician with Superior rating and top honors in state contests.
Edwin HO Griffith son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Griffith will teach chemistry and biology at Athens College in Greece for the coming school year. He will leave around September first to arrive for the term beginning Sept 1. The Near East College association operates the college which offers high school and four years of college work. Edwin is a Cornell College graduate who taught in Wilton Iowa this past year and plans to spend most of the summer at a YMCA camp.
Four more Washington places announce closure on the Fourth of July joining the Ross Motor company Shor ty's barber shop Roberta beauty shop and Dr J A Henders office. A large number of others have been announced and more are expected to join.
Blanche Brook comes back from a week vacation at Winfield staying with her parents Mr and Mrs Alan Brook.
A dramatized courtroom scene on drunken driving drew a large Washington audience at the Methodist church. Judge Schuyler Livingston presided with James Coppock as defense and J A Taylor as prosecutor. Cloud Willits played the defendant as other local figures testified. The event, part of an anti saloon effort, raised the campaign’s most funds yet and spurred further talks by Coppock on the temperance causes.
The Washington post office received 160 bonus bonds for World War II veterans by registered mail. Local recipients will get them via city carriers this afternoon, rural route veterans tomorrow morning, and all sign for receipt before delivery. The post office offers evening hours for verification and cashing or certification of bonds.
In Los Angeles on June 15 six individuals were arrested as District Attorney Baron Fitts announced the dismantling of a nationwide insurance racket. The ring allegedly caused companies to pay out millions in fake accident claims across southern California and beyond.

Des Moines reports a coordinated federal Iowa enforcement drive targets out of state liquor distributors. The Iowa Liquor Commission asks the FAA to revoke licenses for five wholesalers in Sioux Falls East Dubuque Rock Island and Galesburg amid evidence of illicit sales to Iowa retailers. Further investigations involve distributors outside Iowa.
Des Moines reports 175 annual Iowa traffic deaths as weekend fatalities push total. Victims include Ray Starr 34 a Fort Madison penitentiary convict Lester Bolton 40 and Edward Kittle 14 months from Dubuque and Des Moines respectively.
