The Washington Chapter of the DAR will sponsor summer open houses at the DAR Log Cabin in Sunset Park. Public dates are June 16 30 July 14 28 and August 11 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Hostesses on June 16 are Mrs. Robert Morgan and Miss Edna Jones.
Richard Boucher, 21, of Ankeny, died after a Tuesday night shootout with three Ankeny police. Boucher reportedly fired at least four shots. officers fired nine. Police conclude it may be a justifiable shooting.
United Press International reports three bond issues passed Tuesday in Iowa. Olin voters approved 60000 for a new well with only 12 of 149 voting against. Shenandoah approved 255000 for city park repairs. North Scott Community School District won 500000 for school facility additions with 61.8 percent in favor.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute reports in its 1977 yearbook that the United States led as the top supplier of major weapons to Third World nations in 1976, with about 40 percent of global sales. The USSR, Britain, and France trailed, while total world arms spending reached 334 billion dollars, up 3 percent from 1975 driven by a 10 percent rise in Third World purchases.
Commerce Secretary Juanita M. Kreps told a UPI dispatch that deteriorating cities need more money to avoid becoming merely central trash compactors for suburbs. She urged state governments to help reclaim cities and argued Core cities must rebuild economic bases with federal subsidies to cut costs and manage human and environmental challenges.
Polk County District Judge James P. Donato postponed Robert Anthony Williams murder retrial from June 20 to July 5 citing need to exhumed Albert Bowers’ body for crucial tests. Defense seeks evidence on pubic hairs and Bowers’ sterility. Minnesota jurisdiction and cemetery access await legal action. Williams, convicted in 1969, won a new trial from the U.S. Supreme Court in March.
In a closed door session House Democrats pressed Hamilton Jordan over hiring delays and patronage. They criticized his refusal to return calls as they clash with Carter on a $61.3 billion spending bill and push to block amendments. Senate and House votes reflected unsettled support for key White House priorities.
The Washington program of the Comprehensive Education and Training Act begins June 23 with 40 hour weeks. It assists economically and educationally underprivileged youths ages 14 to 21 from local families. Washington youths will tutor preschool and elementary children, with orientation at 9 a.m. June 23 at the Washington YMCA.
Partly cloudy weather expected with a low in the 60s tonight and a high in the mid 80s on Thursday. Winds will come from the southeast at 5 to 10 mph tonight.
Iowa Governor Robert D Ray said he will recommend balanced pay raises for all state workers next week. Negotiated increases of 5 to 7 percent cover about 6000 unionized employees, with broader coverage for other staff. Funding sources and two year terms are suggested. UNI faculty may not settle before July 1 fiscal year start.
Washington hosts are urged to house more than 50 local families for 180 Rotary Exchange Students and 12 chaperones arriving Wednesday June 29. The ninth annual tour spans the United States ending with a return to Washington after overnight stays and a potluck dinner at Sunset Park. Hosts provide dinner Wednesday, overnight and breakfast Thursday, with buses departing around 8 am. Contact Dick or Betty Colby at 653 4812 after 4 30 pm to participate.
Washington County officials explain Iowa law requires juries from comprehensive lists including registered voters tax rolls and driver's license holders. About 1 200 names are drawn with 100 plus called each quarter to serve as petit jurors, countering the belief that voting alone triggers jury duty.
