The 40 piece 451st Army Reserve Band from Minneapolis will give a concert tonight at 7 30 p m in Washington Central Park bandstand. Sponsored by the local Army Reserve unit, the public is invited. Conductor is Warrant Officer Joseph K Komro of St Paul. Program covers contemporary to classic selections.
Washington Lions Club will observe White Cane Day Thursday from 1 to 9 p.m. in the local business district to seek contributions for the Iowa Lions Light Conservation Foundation. The foundation aids individuals with eye problems and public donations support the program.
Those who have not yet returned their chorus books for South Pacific are asked to turn them in as soon as possible to Millie Youngquist or at the Journal office.
The Agency on Aging will hold a public hearing Thursday June 23 at 3 p.m. in Iowa Hall Kirkwood Community College to discuss a proposed 12 month plan covering planning administration and coordination for elderly programs in Merged Area Ten beginning October 1 Comments and criticisms are welcome Elderly citizens are encouraged to attend and details can be obtained by calling 1 800 332 5934 at HAA offices.
The Washington area saw about six tenths of an inch of rain over the past weekend with highly variable coverage. Some nearby farmers reported over an inch, while areas northeast of Washington received no measurable moisture during the two days of showers.
The Washington Crop Boosters Association invites area farmers to join its second annual yields contest with a June 27 deadline. Entry is 20 dollars per crop, with divisions for corn and soybeans. Entrants should note seed varieties and entries go to contest officials Knupp Brinning or Bauer. Yields will be checked in fall and winners honored at a luncheon.
A federal grand jury in Chicago charged John S. Gleason Jr., once commander of the American Legion and head of the Veterans Administration, with misusing more than $528,000 of Mercantile National Bank funds for his personal use. The three counts cover loans to Eartha Watchers Inc, a $60,000 loan to I Irving Davidson, and false SEC proxy statements for Chicago Helicopter Industries. If convicted, penalties include up to five years in prison and fines up to $10,000 per count.
Partly cloudy and warmer through Wednesday with a slight chance of thundershowers in the west on Wednesday. Overnight lows near mid 50s northeast and mid 60s southwest. Wednesday highs reach upper 70s on the east and upper 80s in the west.
Mount Pleasant attorney Donald E. Gartin sues Jefferson County Attorney Edwin F. Kelly Jr. and State Agent Sam Swain for 9 million dollars claiming malicious prosecution and obstruction of justice. Gartin, previously acquitted in a separate jury trial, alleges rights violations to jeopardize his bail and case. He seeks 750000 in actual damages and 1500000 in punitive damages on each of four counts.
Verlon Sturdy, a fifth grader from Miller Park School in Omaha, drowned Monday at Carter Lake after running off a pier while fishing with friends. Police said his companion fled home and did not report the incident, delaying identification for about three hours.
Washington UPI Speaker Thomas ONeill said if President Carter vetoes the water projects bill he will not seek an override but refer the measure back to committee for redrafting He expected sufficient votes to pass a 10.2 billion public works bill including funds for 17 of 18 water projects The vote hinges on whether to delete funds for the Clinch River reactor and whether an override would occur as Congress debates authority and supplemental funds for Clinch River careen through the House and Senate.
Job Service of Iowa reports Washington County’s April unemployment at 2.2 percent, the fourth straight monthly drop. Labor force totals 9,350 with 210 unemployed. agricultural employment rises to 1,520 from 1,290, while non agricultural employment climbs to 6,250. March showed 3.3 percent unemployment with 300 jobless from an 8,930 labor force. Iowa’s statewide seasonally adjusted rate falls to 2.9 percent from 3.4 percent.
The Washington Park Board awarded a 24667 dollar contract to Iowa Road Builders Co. for two new public tennis courts in the southeast corner near Case Field. A drainage system may be added later if included, with the addition potentially raising the total. Construction slated to start in July and finish by late August, funded from park board reserve funds.
Speaker Thomas O Neill kept quiet on the three Republicans considering a party switch, with Rep. John Buchanan of Alabama a likely member. Buchanan said he is unlikely one of the trio but did not deny approaching Democratic leaders. Whalen of Ohio is also named but aides say he has not denied or confirmed the switch.
The 200th anniversary of the national flag is marked with a Capitol ceremony and Flag Day events in Philadelphia. Johnny Cash will perform Ragged Old Flag in the House chamber as 170 troops march to the Washington Monument grounds. Betsy Ross legends persist as historians note disputed origin tales. The Boston School All-City Choir will sing patriotic pieces during the ceremonies.
