A night water main break at South Seventh Avenue and East Washington Street reduced city water pressure while crews worked to repair it. Washington city crews are nearing completion on a 70 block blacktop street renovation project by Richards Construction under city contract.
Robert Porter resigns as District Court Clerk at the Washington County courthouse effective June 30. Porter, who began in 1963 and was re elected to a term ending 1972, will be replaced by the county board until the end of the current term, with voters filling the post thereafter. His resignation dated Friday June 11 was given as he was on vacation and unavailable for comment.
Iowa Power & Light Co ends its 18 month effort to merge with Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric of Davenport. The company said a closing date by June 30 was required for completion but no date could be set. The move halts a merger proposed since 1966 that would have formed Iowa Energy Co serving about 400000 customers amid regulatory and legal battles.
