Fire destroyed two garages on West Monroe in Washington Sunday morning around 4 am. Harold Norton and Charles Walker owned the structures. Five Wellman boys who spotted the blaze alerted the fire department but it could not be stopped. They salvaged a truck near the Norton garage.
A battalion of U S Army paratroopers moved to Phuoc Vinh about 20 miles south of Dong Xoai to secure the area as fighting rages in the region. The operation follows a buildup of Viet Cong activity and reports of heavy casualties on both sides.
Washington Jay-Cees local mechanics and tire dealers checked 295 vehicles on Saturday June 12 213 cars and 9 trucks received safety stickers. 80 cars and 2 trucks were unsafe and needed service. 9 were corrected and rechecked. Main defects were 51 bad tires 25 faulty steering and 15 leaking exhaust systems. Bruce Noble notes garages run similar programs and damaged vehicles can be fixed and rechecked for stickers at local garages.
Three Washington High School seniors to spend six weeks in Leysin Switzerland attending a French language school. They include Jackie Schoonover Jean Morrison and Judy Vetter with teacher Mrs Howard Waddell. The group plans trips to other Swiss cities and will return July 25 to the United States.
William F Mohland 71, retired Iowa Southern Utilities employee, died this morning June 14 1965 at Washington County Hospital. He lived at 633 East Main Street and had been ill since February. Funeral Wednesday at 2 pm at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Stan Woeste. Burial Richland Cemetery. Born July 11 1893 in Talleyrand he married Amy Haworth Mohland June 4 1917. Survivors include wife a stepdaughter granddaughter brother and two sisters.
Phillip Pa Knebel 21 months old son of Patrick and Margo Knebel of Riverside died Saturday June 12 1965 at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a month long illness Mass of the Angels was held at St Marys Riverside Rev Walter Boeckman presiding Burial followed at Mt Olivet Cemetery He was born August 17 1963 in Iowa City Survivors include his parents and grandparents Mr and Mrs Paul Knebel Riverside and Mr and Mrs Wade Johnston North English
Mrs Joseph Buckley 71 died in Chicago. Former resident and pioneer family member with maiden name Joan Kelly. Funeral 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St James Catholic Church Rev T J Lew officiating. Visitation 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery.
Large crowds greet Gemini 4 astronauts James McDivitt and Ed White in Chicago as civil rights groups pause protests. Vice President Humphrey and President Johnson offer praise. NAACP withdraws from mass demonstrations while other groups plan a march.
The Y's Men host a pinochle marathon with prizes planned this year. The event begins at 8 p.m. and ends Thursday evening in the Y building community room with all participants invited.
A committee led by Mrs Mayme Squire starts a citywide survey to map the social spiritual and physical needs of seniors in Washington. Volunteers from churches and local groups will conduct confidential interviews at the YMCA and report needs to the council.
Charlotte Stanley daughter of Mr and Mrs Dean Stanley a junior at Washington High School leaves Washington June 25 to begin an exchange through the American Field Service She will spend summer in Finland then travel from Chicago to New York and sail June 26 aboard the Seven Seas arriving Rotterdam July 6 and continuing to Vaasa Finland
Veteran Washington grocers Dale Fuhr and Joe Cochran along with Nash-Finch of Minneapolis announce a new Jack and Jill supermarket to open in Washington next October. The 7,600 square foot, Colonial style store will offer dairy, meat, frozen foods and refrigerated produce, with air conditioning and 60-car parking. The partners will run the new outlet while remaining at their current northwest square location until completion.
A Runnells Iowa teenager died when his car collided with a semi driven by Everett Roozeboom of Oskaloosa at the junction of Iowa highways 163 and 316. Roozeboom was unhurt. Other weekend deaths include Joseph Vanagas in Warren County and the Abben family in a Dubuque area two car crash along with two grandchildren.
Cloudy and cool through Tuesday with occasional rain. West portions see over 30 percent this afternoon and evening. Lows from 45 to 50, up to 65 in the southwest. Highs Tuesday reach 70 to the middle 70s. Wednesday looks partly cloudy with little change and scattered showers and thunderstorms in the west.
