House panel approves large military pay raise over Johnson

The House Armed Services Committee adopted a Rivers led bill boosting military pay about 10.7 percent on average, authorizing over a billion dollars annually and enacting enlistment bonuses up to eight thousand dollars for skilled roles. The plan includes an annual pay review to compare with private wages.

Iowa Treasurers Seize Overdue Motor Fuel Taxes

State Treasurer Paul Franzenburg announced $76,617 in overdue motor vehicle fuel taxes collected from nine interstate trucking firms. He noted one company paid about $30,000 and claimed high mpg, while Iowa expects audits of all trucking firms.

State 4-H camps held in Madrid Iowa weeklong

Jerry Combs of Washington and Julie Sheetz of Keota represented Washington County at Madrid Iowa for state 4-H Conservation and Health Camps from June 7 to 12. About 100 delegates from Iowa counties attended. Camp topics included forests, plant life, insects, soils, health, nutrition, sanitation and fitness with leadership training and a camp council of elected delegates guiding activities.

Break-ins Investigated at Sorrell Auto Parts and Lumber Yard

Washington law officials investigated two overnight burglaries reported today. Missing cash ranged from 15 to 20 dollars at Sorrell Auto Parts while a total of 106.54 dollars was taken from a safe at Washington Lumber and Fuel. Intruders forced entry through a wall at the auto parts and through a rear window at the lumber yard, then damaged two doors to access the office.

Trombone solo featured at Washington band concert

Washington's Municipal Band presents a concert this week with a trombone solo by Ronald Halvorsen performing Swing Low Sweet Chariot. The program includes God Bless America Berlin and North Iowa Band Festival March Berryman among others. The 8 p.m. concert is in Central Park. The YMCA summer trip to Des Moines and Riverview Amusement Park departs June 23 with a $3 fare and $5 rides day. sign-up by June 21.

Burdock Lumber Co theft reported in Brighton

The Washington County Sheriff reports a break in at Burdock Lumber Co in Brighton. Entry was gained by prying the back door open. A sum of 12.98 was taken and the office was ransacked.

Gunfire in Santo Domingo injures civilians in rebel clash

In Santo Domingo early today gunfire between rebel forces and the Inter American Peacekeeping force wounded at least 10 civilians. Mortar, rifle and small arms fire struck victims near the Duarte Bridge area under peacekeeper protection. Padre Billini Hospital reported the civilian casualties including a woman and a two year old child.

Bill Boshart owner of Mace Motor Company announced the car lot’s relocation is unsettled with several sites under consideration. A new supermarket will be built on the current East Washington Street site, and business will continue as usual during the transition.

McGaffeys Honored for Longtime Washington County Service

Washington Council of Churches honored Mr and Mrs David McGaffey for twenty years of compassionate service in Washington County at a dinner at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They organized loaned sickroom equipment, assisted 65 families, and secured clothing and furnishings with help from local groups and public agencies.

Mrs Buckley to be honored with Wednesday service

A prayer service for Mrs Joan Buckley widow of Harold Buckley will be at 8 this evening at Jones Funeral Home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 30 a.m. at St James Catholic Church. Mrs Buckley 71 died in Chicago and formerly lived in the community.

Step Toward Civil Service in Iowa State Payroll Plan

State Comptroller Marvin Selden said a new salary schedule for nearly 9,000 workers moves Iowa closer to a civil service system. The plan, approved to be reviewed July 1, follows 1965 legislature guidelines and aims to base raises on merit while considering department needs and workloads.
