Des Moines June 14 Roy J. Hild chairman of the Polk county board of supervisors is indicted by a grand jury for allegedly obtaining 703 dollars under false pretenses. The 68 year old official faces charges tied to a welfare department pauper fund claim to Elmer G. Croft for gasoline and repairs from 1946. Earlier counts against two other supervisors resulted in seven year sentences at Fort Madison penitentiary, with appeals to the state supreme court.
New York report says Life With Father played its 3,183rd performance, surpassing Tobacco Road to claim the longest run for an original Broadway production. Oscar Serlin produced the comedy which has grossed over 10 million dollars from stage performances in the U.S.
The White House said President Truman will send a congress Monday a message on the Republican sponsored income tax reduction bill. He is expected to veto the measure though some say he might sign. He must act by midnight Monday or the bill becomes law automatically.
Long Beach announces a 1,000,000 tons shipment of steel pipe for a 1000 mile Saudi Arabia pipeline. Fifty ships will operate for two years, with each round trip 26,000 miles taking 12 days. Peak timing has an Isthmian line freighter leaving Long Beach every five days, valued at about a billion dollars.
Billey D. Nebel and Luis Mae Reeves both of Washington secured a marriage license at the courthouse yesterday.
United Press reports at least 243 people have died in six major civilian air crashes this year. Two crashes, near Port Deposit on May 30 and Bogota on Feb 15, mark the worst peacetime aviation disasters. Other fatalities include LaGuardia May 29, Iceland May 29, Caracas April 8, near Tsingtao January 5, and a U.S. Army courier crash near Tokyo two weeks ago.
A Pennsylvania Central air liner carrying 50 aboard disappeared in a rainstorm, crashing into Blue Ridge mountains near the Virginia West Virginia line. The wreckage was found at dawn with no signs of life. Captain Horace Stark piloted the four engine DC 4 in a normal flight plan, plunging into the mountain due to undisclosed reasons.
Howard L. Witt ric chair of the Washington county AAA says offices statewide will survey seed corn and reed beans for late planters. An estimated 16 600 acres of ecrowland flooded along the Skunk river and 4 000 along English and Iowa rivers may not be planted in 1947, with 6 000 acres likely idle. Farmers needing seed should contact local dealers or the Washington County Agricultural Conservation office, and those with beans or corn seed to sell should report to the county AAA.
Dr Fred E Aisler of Washington was chosen as a ministerial delegate to the Methodist general conference to be held in Boston next May. The selection occurred during the Iowa Des Moines conference session in Des Moines.
A car driven by David Zapello of Riverside, a GI student at the state university, overturned on the soft shoulder at the junction of highways 22 and 1 near Riverside. Damage to the vehicle exceeded $400 with no injuries reported.
