Charity horse show funds to Washington Developmental Center
Proceeds from a Sunday charity horse show at the Washington County fairgrounds go to the Washington Developmental Center for the handicapped. The event begins with halter classes at 10 a.m. and continues with the afternoon show at 11 p.m. Admission is 1 with free entry for children under 12. The day features five halter classes and 21 afternoon show classes. Carol Kucera, 17, of Cedar Rapids is elected governor at the Girls State activities at the University of Northern Iowa defeating Mary Piper, 16, of Bloomfield. Other officers named include Terry Beeler, Jeanne Foster, Mary Cusack, Sandra Fish, Patrice Kuhl, and Pam Hutchinson. Girls State, sponsored by the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary, ends Saturday.

Ammonia Spill Closes Highway Near Iowa City
A 1000 gallon anhydrous ammonia tank pulled by a pickup crashed on U S 2186 near the Iowa City Coralville line. Fire crews from both cities sprayed water to curb the spill. Fireman Jon Delsing was treated for ammonia inhalation at Mercy Hospital. No other injuries reported.
