James Earl Ray Escapes Brushy Mountain Prison

James Earl Ray and five companions escaped Brushy Mountain State Prison in East Tennessee after scaling the wall and slipping past an electric fence while guards opened fire. About 150 lawmen pursued through rugged, snake infested terrain as authorities warned the six could be recaptured. one bank robber, Jerry Ward, was wounded and captured. Ray’s attorney raised concerns of possible abduction and harm.

Dutch marines free hostages in dawn train and school raid

Dutch marines backed by jet fighters stormed a hijacked four car train and nearby Bavensmilde elementary school at dawn, freeing 53 hostages after 19 days. Six gunmen and two hostages were killed. nine train hostages and several attackers were wounded.

Train siege ends as gunmen surrender after 19 days

In Glimmen Netherlands a 19 day hostage ordeal ends when Dutch forces assault a hijacked train. Two hostages and six gunmen die. nine hostages and four others are wounded. Elsewhere at Bavensmilde a separate siege ends with four teachers held but no injuries as soldiers force a surrender.

Scattered thunderstorms today with a severe storm possible and a high in the low to mid 90s. Storm threat ends this evening with clearing, followed by a low in the lower 60s. Sunny Sunday with a high in the low 80s. Winds from the south today then north this afternoon, 10 to 20 mph, tonight north 5 to 15 mph.

Thieves Take Payroll Checks From Washington Hardee's

Ten payroll checks totaling over 400 dollars were stolen from the Hardee's restaurant office in Washington Friday afternoon. Manager Martin Hoenig left the checks in the office to visit the bank around 4 p.m. Upon return, the checks were missing. Banks have been notified and payment on the checks has been stopped. The checks were issued by a North Carolina bank on the Hardee's Food Systems account. Earlier, several employees had already received their checks. An investigation is ongoing. Also, early Saturday, Liz Cavin reported a $200 stereo theft from her Washington home after a forced entry.

Miss Iowa 1977 title to be crowned Saturday night

Julie Anne Johnson, 22 of Kellogg, won Friday’s Miss Iowa talent award with an aria from Carmen. Debra Jo Scheller, 21 of Waverly, captured the swimsuit title. Final judging among 21 contestants occurs Saturday night on the St Ambrose College campus where Miss Iowa will be crowned.

Estate of J Paul Getty Net Income Tops Eight Million

The J Paul Getty estate has earned 8.74 million since his June 1976 death in London. Judge Neil Lake authorized a 4 million payout to the Getty Museum and residual beneficiary in Malibu. Executors Gordon Getty and Title Insurance and Trust Co report a 714 million to 720 million estate value with new investments. California inheritance taxes paid total 1.3 million. no federal estate tax yet.

ITT Sues AT&T Over Antitrust in Channel Bank Gear

ITT sues AT&T Western Electric and Bell Laboratories in Manhattan federal court for 150 million dollars claiming antitrust violations under Sherman and Clayton acts. ITT seeks triple damages for profits lost since 1970 as AT&T and Bell affiliates allegedly favored Western Electric channel bank equipment and blocked ITT sales despite superior and cheaper options.
