Abe Stoner, jailed for larceny, attempted another escape from the county jail after police spotted a bent east window and removed bar. Captured after a prior Halloween breakout, he faces charges of larceny and now breaking jail in connection with the incident.
Welfare Secretary Ribicoff told the House Ways and Means Committee the administration seeks a compromise on President Kennedy’s elderly medical program but ties any agreement to financing via higher Social Security taxes. He called that funding requirement the sine qua non though committee members questioned whether broad concessions would follow.
A Belgrano train crashed into a school bus at a grade crossing near here. Officials say 34 to 41 children died and many more were injured as bodies were scattered and uncounted in the wreckage. Police note about 100 children were aboard the bus.
Area residents earned bachelor of arts degrees at the 87th annual Commencement of Parsons College in Fairfield. Recipients included Adeline Peck Drish of Brighton and Kaye Ann Sobaski of Brighton along with multiple graduates from Washington and Riverside. Jean L. Cookes of Washington earned a bachelor of science degree.
Brett Robert Johnson infant son of Robert and Catherine Seiler Johnson died Sunday in Washington County Hospital born June 8. Graveside services are planned with Stacy Funeral Home of Columbus Junction in charge.
Washington reports Red China’s belt tightening has reduced meat shipments to the Soviet bloc, contributing to rising meat and butter prices and food shortages in Eastern Europe. Trade with China and other satellites has fallen since 1959, worsening access to machinery and grains across the region.
Two Michigan men were treated for facial lacerations at Washington County Hospital Sunday night and released. Albert Benjamin Schantz and Augustus Canfield Ledyard Jr. were the drivers in a two car collision on highway 92 near the Epicurean in Isa County at 7 10 p.m. Schantz attempted to turn into a driveway when his car hit the eastbound Michigan car. Schantz’s vehicle sustained $600 damage and the other car was a total wreck. Injured were Thomas Wayne Smithy and Augustus Canfield Ledyard Jr.
Announcement states Ed and Dale Engle acquire Randall Post Produce in Washington and Farmers Produce in Crawfordsville. The new owners take over today and will operate as Farmers Produce. The Eagles will continue running their Crawfordsville venture.
Washington UPI government expert John J. Croston of the General Services Administration says Commerce and Interior blocked sales of 115 million pounds of nickel stockpile excesses, fearing impact on producers. He urges quick legislation to dispose of about 3.4 billion of surplus stock from a 7.7 billion stockpile as nickel price edges up to 79 cents per pound.
Bertha Willis 44 admitted shooting Ernest Willis 57 at a Des Moines key club where he operated. Police say she claimed self defense after thinking he reached for a gun. she returned to Patrolman Robert Webb and handed back his revolver. Ernest listed in critical condition after five bullets.
Washingtons municipal swimming pool opened at 1 p.m. for the 1962 season after a delay to repair the filter system. Hours are 1 to 5 30 p.m. and 7 to 9 30 p.m. daily for public use with 5 30 to 7 p.m. reserved for swim team practice on Tue and Thu and for family group swimming on Mon Wed and Fri nights.
A Washington man, Ralph Tusing, 23, fired six shots from a .22 pistol near the Chocolate Shop at 10:10 p.m. He smashed a jewelry window and china displays, injuring nothing. Subdued and jailed, he faced malicious injury charges with a $2,500 bond as a crowd gathered nearby.
Investigators probe cause of Northern Pacific derailment near Missoula that killed Theresa Ann Dooms, 20, of Ekalaka, and injured 243 others. Officials consider brake failure or human error as the train from Seattle to Chicago derailed on Evaro Hill at over 70 mph where 30 mph was advised.
The first junior swim practice for ages eight to sixteen will be held at the municipal pool on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Coach Milo Steele Jr. announced summer sessions to run every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. weather permitting.
Martial Edward Crossett 50 died suddenly at his home four miles northwest of Brighton on Sunday at 11 45 AM. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 1 30 PM at Powell Funeral Home Wellman with Rev R D McDonald of Prairie City officiating. Burial will be in Wellman Cemetery. Survivors include his widow Esther Stump six children seven including Duane, Gary, Edna, Thomas, Douglas. his mother Fannie Crossett. three brothers Carmi Merle Joseph Jr.. three sisters Mrs Harold Gray Mrs Wayne Lambert Mrs Jay Miller.
Severe thunderstorms swept central and southern Iowa, dropping up to 3.75 inches of rain and causing injuries and property damage. In Cedar Rapids area a 52-year-old dry goods dealer Robert Heald died after being struck by lightning while water skiing near Coe College. Indianola saw tornadic winds damaging trailers, a new high school building roof, a machine shed at Larro Research Farm, and roofs at Harlan Lumber Co. and the Lazy R motel.
Ira Greene 74 of Columbus Junction died Sunday at 1 p m during a fishing trip on the Iowa River northwest of Conesville. The death was attributed to exertion and a heart attack after a storm forced the men to hurry to their car. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Tuesday at Stacy Funeral Home with burial in Columbus City Cemetery. He was a World War I veteran born Sept 16 1887. Survivors include two brothers Ray and Ralph and a sister Mrs Florence Smith.
The Agriculture Department pegs the 1962 wheat crop at 1 057 670 000 bushels based on June 1 conditions. Winter wheat is 846 216 000 and spring wheat 211 454 000 bushels. Last year winter yield averaged 24.2 bushels per acre, with no spring yield estimate available.
Washington Chamber of Commerce invites all local business people to a Wednesday morning coffee break at the YMCA from 7:30 to 8:30 am. Cub Lohrer, secretary, mailed plans last Saturday. The brief 8 am report from chamber directors has no charge. coffee and doughnuts provided.

He defended business amid steel price tensions and warned against illusory comfort while stressing mutual confidence in economic progress.
