Derailment Nearly Misses Highway 1 Crash

Six cars of a 73 car Milwaukee Road freight derailed west of the Highway 1 and 92 underpass near Washington around 3 35 p m Wednesday. About 600 feet of track damaged. The accident blamed on a sun kink caused by heat and pressure from passing cars. Lead car was empty. Debris cleared amid rain delays. no damage estimate yet.

Partly cloudy tonight with a slight chance of severe thunderstorms early tonight. Friday will be warm with highs in the low 90s. Tonight lows near the upper 60s and south winds 5 to 10 mph. A brief storm risk remains early tonight before clearing.

Board approves CCTV expansion at Washington Junior High

Washington Board of Education approved a 1976 77 CCTV plan costing about 2500 with Iowa Audio Visual Inc. to install cable in classrooms including the music room while deleting offices and other facilities from the project. The district also raised school lunch prices to offset a 2500 deficit and noted enrollment losses affecting state aid viability.

Regents Set 190.5 Million Budget For Iowa State Universities

The Board of Regents approved preliminary budgets totaling 190.5 million for fiscal 1976-77 for Iowa three state universities and two special schools. UI leads with 86.2 million, ISU 72.9 million, UNI 27.1 million, Deaf School 2.8 million, Braille School 1.5 million. Hospital budget 53.8 million includes an 11.5 percent patient fee rise.

City Council Sets Three Year Street Work Program

The Washington City Council approved a three year street construction plan through 1979 totaling about 605,527 at current prices. The plan covers paving widening overlays and right of way acquisitions on portions of 20 streets and guides annual improvements while meeting state fund guidelines. Officials noted past programs were variably implemented due to opposition and budget limits, with future action by the council determining feasibility. The council also approved three sewer projects for 1977-78 costing about 856,438, including a North 12th Avenue trunkline outfall and additional storm sewers on East 15th and East Ninth Streets.
