Fireman Injured Battling Barn Fire Near Washington
Bob Long, a Washington volunteer fireman and Iowa Southern Utilities lineman, was injured while cutting power to a burning barn northwest of Washington. He fell about 30 feet when his belt broke, suffering a broken right leg, crushed left heel, and a hairline fracture of the right wrist. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and is in room 3100.

Accident claims $1500 damage on I-38 collision west of Washington
A two car crash four miles west of Washington on I 38 at 8 55 p m Tuesday caused 1500 in vehicle damage. Finley Mondia 31 of Washington struck William Chmelar 74 of rural Washington as Chmelar turned left. Bruns of Keota followed Chmelar and said Chmelar had his signal on for about a half mile but Mondia did not see it. No charges were filed.

United Press International reports Johnson County voters rejected a 6.5 million bond for a county administrative and law enforcement center with 49 percent support as 60 percent was needed. Lee County rejected a 2.25 million courthouse addition 61 percent opposed. Dubuque County approved 2.2 million for a county care facility with 78 percent yes. Mitchell County approved 100,000 for a courthouse addition. Sac County rejected 475,000 for a courthouse addition. 1 35 School District’s fourth defeat of a 2.25 million high school bond with 772 to 545 vote.

In Cedar Rapids opening arguments in the Pine Ridge murder case defense attorney claims the government charged the wrong people. Darrell Butler and Robert Robideau are accused of fatally shooting two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge reservation last summer. Juror panel of seven men and five women seated. Butler said we never killed nobody and that agents would kill anyone involved. Sikma, for the prosecution, contends evidence shows the FBI agents were ambushed and killed by the defendants.
