Pittsburgh officials outline a shifting traffic plan as Michael Gittens says the street will be one way at night and intermittently two way by traffic officers until June 15 when repairs finish and the street becomes four lanes.
Heavy rains and tornadoes lash northwestern and central Iowa. Floyd River swells to 60 to 70 miles north of Sioux City, flooding fields and forcing cattle to higher ground. Roads blocked, levees tested, and a railroad bridge washed out. No injuries reported.
A prairie tornado struck the Mad Madsen farm near Arcadia Nebraska during a Sunday family reunion killing five adults and five children. Neighbor Jack Witte survived after his wife and three children perished. The storm damaged multiple farms, downed lines, and prompted swift rescue efforts across several Nebraska communities.

Waterloo sheriff plans inquest into the death of Avery Leeper a 60 year old painter shot Saturday by retired dentist Frank Hafta. Hafta says a prowler approached the door shouting and He fired after being threatened. Official ruling calls the shooting justifiable homicide.
Early returns from Italy's parliamentary elections show Premier Alcide de Gasperi's pro American alliance ahead of Communist and Neo Fascist opponents. With 2,268 votes counted, his four party coalition holds 52.16 percent, needing around 50 percent to secure a majority of seats under the new law. A record turnout boosted government hopes for victory.
Police hunted two suspected safecrackers who fled a Eagle Supermarket after forcing Frank M Garvey 22 Davenport Iowa a sailor on leave from Great Lakes Naval Training Station into the burglary. Garvey said he was made to drive and help, but he was charged with burglary and held on $10,000 bond.
The Supreme Court postponed a ruling on five cases challenging racial segregation in public schools to the next term. It did issue a separate decision upholding a DC law requiring restaurants to serve Black patrons, a local desegregation measure not about constitutionality.

Funeral services for Robert M Cherry aged 59 of Janesville Wisconsin were held Saturday afternoon in Zion. He died after a cerebral hemorrhage at Beloit hospital following a night admission. Born July 9 1804 he was the sole child of Lem and Ella Cherry. He married Jean Routh sixty six years ago and is survived by his wife and a daughter Phyllis Carris. Relatives from Washington visited the Cherry home in Janesville after the funeral.
Four persons sustained injuries in a two car wreck at Temple corner on highway 2 west of Washington around 11 am. Six were taken to Washington county hospital with four admitted. Admitted: Mr and Mrs Raymond Fearing and Bill Murphy of Wapello and Mrs Briggs of Chicago. The Briggs husband was unhurt. Both cars were badly damaged.
A two car collision near Clinton Illinois raised the death toll to seven with two children Terry Bentley 12 and Patricia 2 dying at John Warner Hospital. Four others remained in serious or critical condition. Army Capt Dean Bentley 86 of Royal Oak Michigan and John Tarabin of Springfield Illinois driven Tarabin vehicle collided after rear ending a house trailer on U S 54 two miles east of Clinton.
In Washington Kur Ponger 39 and Otto Verber 31 both Vienna born Americans pleaded guilty to conspiring to gather and deliver military secrets to Russia. Judge Alexander Holtzolt sentenced Ponger to five to ten years and Verber to three and a half to five years in prison for spying for the Russians.
A large crowd of Boy Scouts families and friends gathered at the Lake Darling Youth Center Sunday noon for a picnic dinner and court of honor marking the end of the district camporee. Robert Everetts district Scout commissioner presided as advancement awards were given. Harold Hazelett camp director assisted by Myron Salladay and other scoutmasters. Warren Dare district chairman handled arrangements.

Communist planes hit Seoul injuring seven as bombs struck near the home of President Syngman Rhee and U.S. Army headquarters. Anti aircraft fire lasted about 45 minutes. panic spread through the city amid reports of small arms fire near the president’s palace and rioting fears.
Polk County grand jury to investigate payments from the Iowa Cemetery Officials Association to State Sen. De Vere Watson. Herring says the probe will cover records and officers to determine if criminal liability exists. Watson admits research work for the 1953 legislature but does not disclose the amount.

District Judge Dring Needham in Des Moines ordered a delay in state action against stamp firms. A temporary injunction shields Sperry and Hutchinson Co. and Gold Bond Stamp Co. while the case proceeds, allowing the firms to operate before a permanent injunction is decided. Hoegh asserts stamp operations are illegal but allows individual firms to issue their own stamps.
A marriage license was issued to Harvey W. Noordsy of Sioux Falls South Dakota and Betty J. Koehler of Ainsworth. The couple plans to wed soon, according to local records.
Des Moines reports a continued crackdown on untaxed cigarettes entering Iowa from Missouri. Road blocks near the Iowa Missouri border were planned as 14 people were arrested last week near Keokuk and Lamoni. Seven pleaded guilty to bringing unstamped cigarettes into Iowa and were fined. two pack limit and tax rules were enforced.
Defense Secretary Charles E Wilson told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee the United States will maintain the world’s best air force, disputing Gen Hoyt S Vanderberg’s earlier statements. He warned against defense cuts amid a Korean truce and urged staying the current program with a more active military attitude.
Allies and the Communists signed a prisoner repatriation agreement that bars forcible return and sets up a neutral commission to decide custody. The accord, a major step toward an armistice, leaves other administrative issues to be resolved and notes a resurvey of the cease fire line.
