Mason City Police Chief FE Wolfe said Burns confessed to originating a fictitious tale that he and about 40 locals were picked up by government agents investigating supposed pro Nazi activities. He called the story a jest with no foundation.
Des Moines reports heavy rainfall across multiple counties with thunderstorms and showers. Readings include Clarion 2.6 inches, Garner 2.5, Mason City 1.9, Algona 1.56, Webster City 1.27, Hampton 0.47, Estherville 1.10, Storm Lake 0.85, Arnolds Park 0.51, Humboldt 0.5 inches, and Sioux City 0.07 inches. Charles City logged 2 inches in eight minutes, flooding basements in several districts.
Mason City Junior College won unanimous school board approval to offer civilian air training this summer. The program would open within ten days if the Civil Aeronautics Authority approves the application and would mirror the pilot training courses run during the regular year at four year colleges.
Fort Madison A C Geisel 69 escaped the state penitentiary with $15. He has used several aliases and was prisoner No 15184. In a long career he has spent over 27 years in penitentiaries across four states and in multiple jails.
President Ed Win McGrew announced at commencement that Dr. E. H. Stranahan of Friends University Wichita Kansas will return to Penn College as dean. His daughter Miss Esther Stranahan will become head of religious education at William Penn College.
Forty five Iowans enlisted in the United States Navy Tuesday, announced Friday at the navy recruiting station in Des Moines. The group joins a long line of Iowa volunteers answering the call to service as recruitment continues across the state.
Russel Sibrel, 14, was accidentally shot and killed Friday afternoon while he and Paul Bargar, also 14, played with a 22 caliber pistol in the Bargar basement. The weapon discharged as it fell, Sibrel leaning to pick it up and the bullet struck him in the heart. Sibrel is the son of Mrs. Lester Kinseth.
A warranty deed issued June 15 1865 signed by President Franklin Pierce was placed on file in the Black Hawk county recorder's office.
General Pershing urged the United States to provide the allies with unlimited quantities of planes artillery small arms and ammunition. Sheriff reports two Iowa men Ralph Downing and Rev. J A Underberg both of Cherokee were found dead in Leech lake after a fishing trip they disappeared May 28. Their charred boat, believed to have burst into flames while refueling, was located days earlier.

Fifteen driving licenses were issued at yesterday's examination conducted by Ben Bentzinger of the state highway patrol in Washington. Ten others failed to pass. Iowa state employment services reports 7,280 placements for April. Of these 6,065 were in private industry and 1,215 in public employment. Private placements rose 4 percent from March and 195 percent from April 1939, driven mainly by demand for farm and domestic workers.
A head on crash two miles west of Woodbine on highway No. 80 left one man dead and another injured. Eighteen bus passengers were unhurt. Oscar Keen of Logan was the bus driver.
British military experts doubt the Weygand line breakthrough signals the real attack. They suggest Hitler may strike via Switzerland from the Black Forest before swinging west into France, with Italy aiding by attacking across the Alps into France.
