The Free Methodist church in Davenport held a mortgage burning service to announce it is debt free. Rev. T. A. Dailey district elder and Rev. R. Nielsen pastor led the ceremony at the Davenport congregation.
The Iowa Conservation Commission ordered lakefront buildings removed from Lake Okoboji and Spirit Lake. The last to go was the Inn Pavilion at West Okoboji, a landmark since 1900 used for summer parties. Owners Mrs Callender and Mrs Jaquith plan to remodel a garage as a dining room for their hotel.
Fairfield student Jack Gorman will enter Fairfield Senior High School next fall after nine consecutive years with no absences or tardies at Lincoln Grade School and Junior High.
North Western railway will route two ultra fast diesel powered trains through Cedar Rapids as part of a Chicago to Denver schedule starting June 18. Officials claim the units will be among the world’s fastest long distance passenger trains and will run at speeds between 85 and 110 miles per hour depending on the segment.
John Howell of Security Savings Bank found a 59 year old petition asking to move the post office from its current building to a new location. The document to the Postmaster General bore 200 Eagle Grove residents signatures. Only five of the original signers remain alive today.
Davenport aldermen faced a heated dispute over burning a squatter's hut on City Island. City officials removed the owner's property and fired the shack as residents, who had agreed to vacate two years earlier, remained. The council paused further action until the city attorney's opinion is obtained.
City council schedules July 1 as the date for a fourth election this year to decide on a gas franchise after a 1,400-signature petition. The vote concerns Iown Electric Light and Power Company's bid to run a fas system in Ames.

Thom as F. McConnell of Chicago died from severe injuries after a head on collision that killed five others near Wilton Junction. Coroner’s inquest set for today. McConnell was a furniture salesman formerly from Des Moines. The crash marked Iowa’s 165th fatal auto accident that year.
At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland delegates and observers report strong Landon support. New York State, once expected to yield 26 to 30 votes, appears ready to cast about 70 of its 90 for Alf Landon on the day before the convention opens. Senator Borah and colleagues weigh in as neutral observers amid a growing vice presidential buzz for Col. George N. Peek.
Judge Oscar Hale of Wapello announced he will return to Washington for another day’s session on Saturday June 29. He had held court Saturday substituting for busy district judges across five counties and signed numerous orders with no trials or hearings scheduled.
R W Kelley of Ottumwa a director of the Iowa Salty council and chairman of the organization committee will speak Friday evening at a meeting to organize a safety council in Washington county. The American Legion hall hosts the meeting which invites mayors and all organizations interested to send representatives and join in forming the council affiliated with state and national safety bodies.
Weyne Brown transfers from WBerwyn Tl to Iowa City where he becomes manager of the Firestone store, taking charge this Saturday. Brown's move places him in charge of operations and staff at the new location.

A city council meeting last Friday approved a new police car for Washington officers. Marshal Blaine Holmes invited Joe, a Journal reporter, to ride along in the Ford and see the smoother ride. Ife joined as a passenger during the test, following months of agitation for the vehicle.
Dr. W. J. Masson departs this evening for Beaver Falls Pennsylvania to attend a meeting of the Associate Presbyterian church synod.
Bidders are invited to operate an extra round trip six times weekly on the Star mail route between Washington and Iowa City. The Iowa City to Washington trip would depart at 11 50 a m and return from Washington at 2 p m, with each leg taking about ninety minutes.
Washington postal savings increased by 933 dollars in nine months. On March 31 Washington held deposits totaling 238,484,952 dollars with 642 depositors listed on June 30, 1985. Nationwide there were 116,123 depositors in 249 offices totaling 60,329,094 dollars. Bankers urge abolishing the system, claiming obsolescence, though the postal savings system is self supporting and may survive.
Claire Booth owner manages Booth Amusement Company fixing permanent headquarters in Washington. Booth, 16 years in show business, purchases new equipment including merry-go-round ferris wheel airplane ride and kids ride. He will operate during Washington county centennial celebration and Brighton event and hopes to develop a full road show from home base of his mother Mrs Bertha Phillips.
Mea R E Frestone travels from Torrington Wyoming to visit sister Mrs J P Thomas on Saturday. Mrs Ella Nelewanger of Crawford also spent the weekend with Mrs Thomas.

Hankow June 8 A war council between Canton and Nanking governments to plan a united China against Japan was predicted as a partial settlement of the north south civil war. Cantonese forces invaded southern Hunan and entered Chenchow before northern troops withdrew to avert a clash.
Hong Kong reports all shore leaves for American and British sailors are canceled while ships are ordered to stand by for protection of nationals in case of renewed conflict between rival Chinese governments.
Three area vacation schools opened this morning with local churches hosting sessions. The United Presbyterian Methodist union school reported about 76 pupils with 125 expected overall, while the Presbyterian Church plan anticipates 60 or more after week growth. A Christian church session started with 29 students, and the Baptist school enters its second week with high attendance of 61 last week before closing.
