Water Department to Flush NW Washington Hydrants
The Washington water department will begin flushing fire hydrants in the northwest part of the city on Tuesday and continue until all hydrants are flushed. Marvin Glandon, superintendent, says there will be no flushing on Mondays but the process may cause rusty water and low pressure in affected mains.

United press report says central and southwest Iowa endured 100 plus degree heat Sunday with 103 at Winterset 102 at Atlantic 101 at Des Moines and Lamoni and 100 at Council Bluffs. Cooler, drier air moves in today bringing relief with highs dropping to 70s in northeast Iowa 80s in the southwest and overnight lows in the 40s to 50s.

Bride Stabbed Groom After Six Hour Marriage
Stockton police report a man aged 42, Elmore Walton, was stabbed four to five times by his wife Stella, 45, during a wedding reception dispute. The couple had married six hours earlier after an argument sparked by Walton’s drinking. Stella was jailed.

Airplane Crashes in Corn Field After Takeoff
An Iowa City couple escaped injury when their home built airplane went down in a corn field after attempting to take off from Washington Municipal Airport. Pilot Burt Bonebrake blamed loss of power and an out of place cockpit control, noting eight years and 108 flying hours on the craft. Witnesses saw lift-off from the runway end before the leftward banking crash during a Washington Flyers Club fly in breakfast featuring plane rides and parachute exhibitions.

Des Moines Iowa. The Executive Council denied Attorney General Turner request to reverse last week’s decision to hire private lawyers to defend members of two state councils accused of violating Iowa open meetings law. Firemen hurt in Iowa blaze at lumber mart
Two firefighters were hospitalized for heat exhaustion after a late Sunday blaze heavily damaged the Tri County Cash Lumber Mart in Jefferson Iowa. Fire crews from Chardan Scranton and Grand Junction aided local departments as high heat and 90 plus temperatures hampered efforts. The fire took about four hours to control and left an office and three storage buildings destroyed. It may smoulder for days among piles of new lumber.

Damages Rejected in Grain Sales Civil Suit
A Washington County District Court jury found no damages for Yarmouth Feed and Grain Inc. in a breach of grain sales contract case against Richard Swailes of rural Ainsworth. The panel awarded nothing after about two and a half hours of deliberation, with Swailes denying any contract and the firm seeking 17724 for soybeans delivered none in 1973.
