Warn Cyclists Without Helmets In May Fatalities In Iowa
DES MOINES UP I Four of seven motorcyclists who died in May on Iowa streets were not wearing helmets. In three cases one rider wore a helmet and it was unclear for the other two. The seven riders were among 39 May traffic deaths in Iowa. Public Safety Commissioner Charles W Larson urged helmet use despite repeal, noting head injuries from crashes. He compared May 1977 fatalities to May 1976’s 75 deaths, a 49 percent decrease.

United Press International reports severe storms sweeping the Southeast and Atlantic Seaboard left at least ten dead. A fishing boat Dixie Lee II capsized in high seas with nine missing after a 15 foot wave. Kentucky and Georgia record multiple fatalities from storms, including a plane wreck near Pikeville and a honeymooning couple’s car crash. Winds toppled trees and caused electrocutions and structural collapses across several states.

The City of Washington advances a three year plan to resurface 4.5 miles of streets and install about 1 million dollars in storm sewer work to drain the northeast area. Karol Krotz daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Krotz from rural Columbus Junction was crowned district nine pork queen at the June Appreciation Days event in Washington. representing Washington County she was chosen for poise industry knowledge and speaking ability. Cindy Greene the 1976 queen passes the crown and Karol will compete for Iowa Pork Queen next winter along with other district queens. About 300 attended and pork chops were served by local producers. Marian Owens of Columbus Junction was re elected district representative on the state park board. Mrs Robert Bonar was elected district 9 president with officers Mrs Dennis Molyneux and Mrs Robert C Johnson.
