SAN JOSE Calif UP a busload of 91 children went to school crying after a 13 year old boy accidentally fired a tear gas pencil on the bus The sheriff s office said they did not explain why the boy carried the device.
Washington house subcommittee keeps 1958 soil bank commitments at 500 million for acreage reserve with a five thousand dollar cap per producer. Senate actions preserve administration program while reducing conservation reserve and setting future ceiling at 350 million for following year.
Robert Everetts was re-elected president of the YMCA board of directors at the organizational meeting. New officers include Bill Boshart vice president, John Butler secretary, Dick Weeks treasurer. Four new membersGene Tucker Irv Whitman Nels Westermark John Owen attended. James Anderson general secretary received a salary increase as a vote of confidence.
Federal Judge Joseph McGarraghy ordered U.S. authorities to show cause why Army Specialist 3C William S. Girard should not be returned to Japan for trial on charges he killed a Japanese woman scavenging on a firing range. He set hearings for next Monday and kept Girard in U.S. custody while habeas issues are resolved ahead of a June 21 Japanese trial.
Senate hearing hears Anthony Conforti testify that George L. Stuart ran a dictatorship in Local 1 Chicago, dipping into union funds and removing dissenting officers. Conforti cited $6750 given to Stuart and $2591 for camera equipment in 1954.
Congress awarded the widow of President Abraham Lincoln an annual grant of $3,000, continuing a long standing pension program. The payment supports the surviving spouse amid postwar national memory and civil service architecture shaping veterans and families.
Three Iowa livestock dealers pleaded innocent to federal mail fraud charges in a 37 million dollar check kiting scheme. Eldin Viers of Marshalltown Merle Mersman of Cole and Howard Stout of Oskaloosa face 24 12 counts each with possible penalties up to five years and fines. The scheme allegedly moved 37 025 million in checks to obtain funds from two banks causing losses of 352 000 to Iowa banks.
A potato laden tractor-trailer collided with a second truck carrying 41 migrant farm workers nine miles north of Fayetteville North Carolina. At least 16 died with 26 injured as flames engulfed the scene. Victims were primarily Negro workers from Mississippi Alabama Georgia and South Carolina. Driver Gilbert Peters 25 of Pennsylvania said the workers’ truck failed to stop and pulled into his path. The crash site on U S 301 marked one of the worst traffic disasters on record with multiple fatalities occurring after the initial impact.
The annual meeting of the Townsley Park Fair Association will be next Monday evening June 10 in the show barn at the fair grounds. Six board members will be elected. terms expiring include Ernest Wagner Charles Hotle Cloid Willits J H Jones Don Robison and John Ganon. Plans for August fair will be discussed.
President Eisenhower sailed to sea aboard the 60 000 ton USS Saratoga with top officials for a 24 hour study of guided missiles jet operations anti submarine warfare and defenses against atom bombs at Mayport Florida. He arrived from Washington aboard the Columbine 1 as the carrier stood ready to sail. Skyray jets greeted him as they catapulted from the deck.
David F. White 42 died at Memorial Hospital Mt. Pleasant after a year of ill health. Funeral at Swedesburg Lutheran Church with burial in the local cemetery. He was born June 11 1914 in Atlantic son of Milton and Maude White. Survived by wife Anna May four children two brothers three sisters and mother. He served three years in World War II and lived near Crawfordsville before moving to his present home three years ago.
Parsons College will open a four year bachelor of science in nursing program in partnership with Ottumwa Hospital. The first class of 50 will study two years at Parsons and two years at Ottumwa for a degree and RN certification. The program aims for accelerated study with summer terms and cost under 1000 with hospital credit.
May rainfall exceeded normal levels across most of the state with Appanoose County at 2.5 inches and Northwood recording 1.099 inches. North central areas ran about 3 inches above average while south central lagged. a warm 88 degree day and a 27 degree low marked the month amid storms, hail, and wind damage.
Beverly Day, two, daughter of Mr and Mrs William A Day, was killed on her father's farm near Leon Iowa when run over by a pickup truck driven by Larry Holland, 15, who was backing up and did not see her. The accident occurred about 32 miles south of Woodland.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sadie Dagle aged 84 will be held at Gould Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Hugh Guy pastor of the Christian Church officiating. Mrs. Dagle died Wednesday morning and burial will be in the Methodist Cemetery.
Mrs. Evan Evans 65 of 803 South Third Avenue died at 9 20 a m Thursday June 6 1957 at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after suffering a stroke earlier. Daughter of Thomas E and Mary Jones she was born November 22 1891 near Wymore Nebraska and married Evan Evans. The couple lived on a Crawfordsville farm before moving to Washington three years ago. She belonged to the Presbyterian Church and was the last of her family. Survived by her husband and several Nebraska cousins. Jones Funeral Home in charge. Burial in Cambrian Cemetery.
Army Specialist William S. Girard of Ottawa Illinois selected It suro Hayashi a Tokyo based veteran criminal lawyer to defend him in a Japanese court for the January 30 accidental killing of Mrs Naka Sakai on an American firing range. The charge is causing death by wounding with potential penalties from days to twenty years. Maj Stanley F. Levin of the 1st Cavalry Division will act as his personal adviser.
An American, Douglas F. Scott, asked police to protect his four young children in Kamakura after threats vowing to cut them in pieces unless he paid about 3 million yen. Police set up a special watch around the home while two children stayed with a friend. Scott, a Yokosuka Navy worker, and his Honolulu-born wife Midori, married in 1950, have lived in Japan since 1955.
Two Waterloo men died when a 30 foot wall from a demolished brick building collapsed during work on a new parking ramp in the business district. Harry Wildes Jr. and Aloysius Reis, both 42, were killed. one unidentified co worker escaped serious injury. The wall fell away from the street, sounding like an explosion and shaking nearby buildings. Reis had recently moved to Waterloo from Dunkerton.
Tickets for the Chamber of Commerce dinner at the Country Club were selling well with about 15 remaining this morning. The event will begin at 6 30 p.m. with dinner followed by a program and entertainment.
Albert A. Verbrugge was promoted from captain to deputy police chief in Paterson New Jersey and after sharing the news with friends found his newly parked car damaged by a hit and run driver causing about 200 dollars in repairs. Verbrugge is uninsured and expects the raise from his promotion to cover the costs over time.
The Iowa special legislative investigating committee will split into two sub committees to speed work. Rep. Clark McNeal will lead one group and Sen. Duane Dewel the other. The panel will study land purchases by the Highway Commission at Waterloo and alleged bid padding.
Billy Graham addressed 18 000 people in New York as police searched for a bomb after a note warned of killings. Three hours earlier 25 officers swept the arena. 622 converts were recorded, bringing the crusade total to 12 684 in 22 days and over 392 500 attendees.
A federal grand jury indicted three former Tennessee residents in a Shannon City Iowa bank burglary on March 24. Thomas G. Tinkle Jr. and William M. Pegram with his wife Latane face charges of burglary theft and conspiracy while Mrs. Pegram and her husband are charged with taking loot across state lines. Tinkle released on 25000 bond. Pegram group held in Reno New Mexico with arraignment set for June 14.
