Two officers in an unmarked NYPD car spotted a motorist making an illegal U turn and speeding away. After a chase they halted the violator, who turned out to drive another unmarked police car.
About 150 members attended the annual Washington Chamber of Commerce dinner at the Country Club. Dr. Harry C. McKown urged that intelligent people do not fear new ideas and cited steamboats railroads and airplanes to illustrate history’s hostile reception to progress. He warned that rapid advances shorten travel times and cited opinions against flying before realizing faster crossings.
W E De Witt of Oskaloosa was arrested by an Iowa highway patrolman on forgery charges after cashing a $10 check at the Washington State Bank using the name De Witt. Cafe operators alerted authorities and he is held in Washington under $2,000 bond.
Mrs. V. David Miller, 56, died at her Kalona home June 6 1957 after a long illness from cancer. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at East Union Mennonite church with Rev A Lloyd Swartzendruber. burial East Union Cemetery. She was born Blanche Ropp near Kalona June 30 1900 and lived in Michigan and Kansas before moving to Kalona in 1953 with husband, three stepsons, and extended family.
The estate of Chester C. Howard files a district court petition seeking $20,000 damages for his death. Alleged July 17 1956 accident near Des Moines caused by negligence of Eugene R. Faust, truck driver for Des Moines Concrete Pipe Inc. Howard died six days after the crash from brain hemorrhage. Plaintiffs Mildred Howard administratrix and Iowa Mutual Insurance Co. name Des Moines Concrete Pipe Inc. as defendant.
A large air sea search for two downed pilots off the Georgia coast interrupted Navy demonstrations for President Eisenhower and Cabinet members. Sixteen of the 19 ships paused to aid the rescue while drills on jet planes missiles and defense systems were canceled. one pilot was rescued from a life raft and the other remained missing. The Saratoga itself did not join the search due to its size.
Arthur Loomis 73 died at 7 30 p m Thursday June 6 1957 at his Richland home from a stroke. He was born July 7 1883 in Hedrick Iowa and lived in Packwood Keokuk County and Richland. Survived by wife Hilma Sable Loomis three daughters Inez M Loomis E Pearl Loomis and Mrs Marion Augustine and three grandchildren. He was a Mason and former Keokuk County Board of Review member and Richland Township assessor.
Forty five Washington merchants have said they will enter the Ridiculous Day parade on Thursday June 13 with at least 20 more expected before the deadline. Merchants urged to call the Chamber of Commerce if not contacted. A morning concert by Leonard Bomber and his Melodaires will also be held in Central Park as part of the day’s events.

In Villa de Joao Belo Mozambique a native mother Selina Corane gave birth to quintuplets four boys and a girl born prematurely. Doctors said all five infants died within 24 hours due to lack of resistance while the mother remained well. The weights ranged from 2 pounds 10 ounces to 2 pounds 14 ounces.
Senate Rackets Committee charged the Bakery Workers Union with squeezing 85,470 from workers and employers and giving about 60,000 to Vice President Max Kralstein. Testimony cites ticket sales and a 57,000 gift to Kralstein, plus a 17,963 banquet and other expenses.

DES MOINES. Disabled individuals who have filed proper applications will begin drawing Social Security disability insurance checks in August. Clyde Nielsen, acting district manager of the Des Moines Social Security office, said eligibility requires at least five years of prior Social Security work and six months or more of disability, with applications due by June 30.
