A window at Frank Scarcello grocery was broken by a bolt washer tossed from a passing car. The incident raises total broken store windows to 36 since April 12 amid a dispute between retail clerks union and grocers over opening and closing hours.
Des Moines reports that state officials had not waived camping fees for 1299 Boy Scouts at Lake Ahquabi. Tall Corn Council shifted its Camporee to Camp Mitigwa along the Des Moines River between Madrid and Woodward.
About eight thousand people attended Fort Dodge concerts linked to the Iowa Association of Band Masters convention. Forty nine members registered for the event. The afternoon program featured the Ames municipal band and the Salvation Army band from the Des Moines district. The Monadn Post American Legion band from Sioux City played in the evening.
More than 1500 Cedar Rapids residents of Czech descent joined a Bohemian Memorial Day service at the Bohemian National cemetery. The event began with a parade through the decorated grounds and featured Theodora B. Hlubucek as principal speaker.
Justice of the Peace J P Seibert 74 known for juve nile cases died at his home in Oskaloosa. He sentenced juveniles to Sunday school and outfitted those lacking proper clothes. He escorted his group to church, and repeat offenders faced weed pulling. Survived by wife, a son and a daughter. Formerly in local clothing business.
Roya Holz of Rippey Iowa has been named the Danforth fellowship recipient for outstanding junior agriculture students at Iowa State College. He will spend two weeks in St Louis Missouri with 37 other states and two weeks at the American Youth Foundation camp in Shelby Michigan.
Mount Pleasant reports the death of the Rev Thomas Osborn at age 71 from heart disease. A 47 year veteran of the ministry, he served 11 Methodist churches including Mount Pleasant Fairfield and Wellman and supervised the Burlington district. Survived by his wife and two daughters. Funeral set for Tuesday afternoon at First Methodist church.
Milan Sharpe, 93, longtime Iowa resident and veteran of the Indian wars, died after several weeks of illness. At age 12 he served in the Northern Border militia after the Spirit Lake massacre in 1857, earning a bronze Indian war emblem and a $50 monthly government pension.
Chicago police say Robert Nixon an 18 year old is alleged to have confessed to beating to death with a brick Mrs Florence Johnson a nurse slain in Chicago Nixon is said to have admitted killing two other Chicago women and two in Los Angeles in separate attacks.
The southeastern Iowa Holstein dairy cattle show at the Negus barn featured 52 animals from 17 owners and was praised as the best of its kind in Iowa this year. Judge C Y Cannon and Arthur Porter cited strong breeder interest led by Alvin Lueder. Eighteen bulls and 34 cows were shown with a 4-H judging team from Lee county taking top honors.
Rain fell across parts of Iowa on primary day as polls stayed open until eight. It was forecast total state votes near 400000 with Republicans eyeing about 250000 and Democrats about 156000. Senator Guy M. Gillette and opponent Otha D. Wearin expected to win the Democratic senatorial nomination.
Premier Edouard Daladier ordered tighter frontier cautions and launched an inquiry into the air raid from the Spanish border. Indignation rose as French officials blamed rebel Spain for the raid and pledged to pursue any aircraft that threatened French territory.
H R Morgan of Washington and two associates won a Chicago trip from International Harvester for top performance in a tractor delivery contest. Morgan posted a 125 percent increase while Maplecrest farms and Henry County home dominated cattle placings.
Arrangements are made for the Journal to receive returns from the primary election tonight. Each county precinct report is expected before morning, with most totals likely in early. Correspondents and election board representatives will phone results as counts finish, and state senatorial and first district congressional race figures are anticipated.
More than 200 boys and girls enrolled in daily vacation Bible schools opening in three Washington churches. Methodist church reports 103, United Presbyterian about 59, and Four Square 38 enrolled with others to join. Programs run this week and extend to next Monday at additional churches.
Miami wires report M. F. Braxton and his son Pedro, the last held in the Jimmy Cash kidnapping inquiry, were released by federal agents. They joined their family in Princeton and declined to speak as threats of legal action against the FBI hovered. No other suspects remained in custody.
Charles Hays formerly of Washington now a California resident recovering from injuries after an automobile crash in Fresno. Hays and Mrs. Hays were visiting when a man rushing his son to a hospital ran a stop sign and collided with their car. He suffered two broken ribs bruises and a punctured lung and will be laid up for several weeks.
The Journal reports mixed details on two awards given at the high school graduation. Wilma Richards received the American Legion scholarship rather than the Legion Auxiliary award, which is biennial and last awarded to Glenn Miller a year ago. The Legion scholarship is awarded annually.
Washington Chamber of Commerce selects Frank McFarlane to the board to replace Stanley McKeown as vice president. Cloid Willits takes McKeown's seat on the board. The group plans no regular meetings until September, with business conducted by the board. Ruth Weasler of Bowesmont, North Dakota, visits relatives in town.
Rev. W. J. Stevens leads the school with assistants Mrs. Helen Sage Mrs. Mary Misel and Mrs. Leslie Hootman. Additional attendees and activities are expected to join the program as it expands.
A man who detested Oscar Strauss planted six sticks of dynamite on his car spark plugs. The engine misfired and Oscar drove to a garage where investigators found no explosion. Strauss, a gambler nicknamed Littl Germany, suspects a rival but cannot name a culprit.
Prof. George R. Davis reports in the Iowa Business Digest that Iowa shows smaller declines than the U S in early 1937 and 1938. He notes April gains over March in building contracts retail sales and other sectors while national production fell up to 32 percent. He cites political rivalries labor tensions and international unrest as confidence dampeners though vacation spending and readjustments in production costs signal some improvement.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture announced seven district weed conferences in cooperation with Iowa State College Extension Service. County board supervisors, auditors and deed commissioners were urged to attend as discussions cover weed law administration, county weed control programs and seed sale enforcement. Schedule lists Independence, Washington, Chariton, Atlantic, Cherokee, Mason City and Ames meetings from June 9 to June 17.
Three licences for June weddings were issued at the courthouse Saturday. Those who obtained them include Charles Barclay and Virginia Moore of Washington, Richard R. Johnston of Fairfield and Martha Anne Shelangoski of Washington, Boyd E. B. White of Afton and Lola Coppock of Indianola.

A French hospital was hit, a surgeon wounded, and French marines sealed the area. Edward Lockwood of Indiana narrowly escaped amid streets littered with bodies and uniforms. Britain to protest the raids as the death toll climbs past 2,000 with yesterday’s tally reported near 500.
Milford 12 year old Dawn injured Saturday afternoon when his bicycle crashed into a car on the Richmond No 1 road. The rider pulled from behind a road maintainer and struck Bert Stumpf's auto, suffering a scalp wound and a damaged thumb.

Grinnell College awarded 147 bachelor of arts degrees and eight bachelor of music diplomas during the commencement at Congregational church. Charles P. Megan, president of the Illinois Bar Association, delivered the address on Youth: Its Cause and Cure.
