Larry Lown two year old son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Lown recovers from surgery to remove a peanut from his lung at the University Hospital in Iowa City.
In Ringsted 35 voters waited in a hall as Republican ballots ran out. Officials telephoned surrounding towns for more ballots after the supply depleted during the election process.
Indianola report: Mrs J L Browne 78, mother of Mrs Henry A Wallace and wife of the U S secretary of agriculture, died after a year and a half of illness. Funeral plans await word from Mrs Wallace who is expected to attend.
Mount Vernon reports Cornell College awarded an honorary Doctor of Law to Dean Paul C. Packer of the University of Iowa education department and to President William J. Ganfield of Carroll College during the eighty eighth commencement. Ninety six seniors received bachelor’s degrees.
Fairfield reports the fifty ninth Parsons College ceremony with 27 seniors receiving degrees and four earning two year diplomas. Hubert Utterback of Des Moines, ex judge and congressman, will deliver the commencement address at Barhydt chapel.
Mrs George A Huffman of Des Moines, wife of a state commerce commissioner, died in Boone County Hospital from injuries suffered in a Memorial Day auto accident. Her husband and daughter Miriam were with her at the end, both injured in the same crash.
Iowa City news states Prof. Lee E B Travis former head of Iowa State University psychology dep resigns after upheaval last February. Travis will join the University of Southern California beginning June 20 under Prof. Milton Metfessel who earned a PhD here in 1926.
Eugene Kahle, 10 year old son of Mr and Mrs Benjamin Kahle of Dubuque, died in an accidental shooting on the Mississippi River near the city while fishing with brother Lowell, 7, and Harlow Vogt, 16. A .22 rifle in the boat discharged when its trigger caught in Eugene’s clothing, the bullet entering above the left eye.
Thousands expected for six day Fort Dodge music festival where eighteen bands perform from morning to night. The new forty five thousand dollar music pavilion will be dedicated in the evening with guest conductors and a massed finale by eight musicians.
Sioux City report on the sixty fourth annual state encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic. Department Commander Michael Hawk and five comrades plan the encampment parade with hopes to ride rather than march. The gathering reflects on Gettysburg and Sherman’s March to the Sea and Iowa’s wartime contributions.
County office holders seeking re nomination on the republican ticket were largely successful with several exceptions. Fred Bauer fell short of the 35 percent needed for a nomination, requiring a convention. Auditor Miss Ethel Grecian and Treasurer Marion George won decisive majorities, while Harve Wilson was re nominated for supervisor. Other incumbents retained their seats, and democratic contests in two supervisor races produced Quinn and Bell victories.
By June 7 incomplete results show four Iowa incumbents leading challengers. Vincent Harrington leads Ray Murphy 3526 to 1885 in the 9th district with 86 of 209 precincts reporting. Thomas K Martin holds a substantial Republican lead in the 1st district. in 187 of 245 precincts, Martin has 9943 to 6461 for Ralph Jones to face Rep Edward Richer.

Miss Gladys Karl returns to Fort Dodge to assume the county nurse post for Washington county health unit replacing Stella Jorpeland who moves to Cedar Rapids with the Visiting Nurses association. Karl was assigned by Edith Countryman state supervisor of nurses at Des Moines.
Newell C. Day of Burlington spoke to the Rotary Club on what makes a man click in business. He led a self analysis clinic on traits like tolerance patience and enthusiasm. Guests included Mrs. Gertrude Stewart Lee Norris and Walter A. Logan. A joint Rotarians and Y's Men meeting is planned for next Monday noon.
