Iowa City area student Warren J. Wirtz of Keokuk and University of Iowa senior was named best student of French in the university for the year. He received a deluxe volume of Prosper Merimee works as a gift from the Government of France.
The Ames city council in a special session approved by a 4 2 vote an ordinance limiting beer sales to downtown Ames. The measure bars renewal of permits in Campustown near Iowa State University after expiration.
A blaze at Stone Park riding academy in Sioux City destroyed stables after an oil stove explosion. Twenty one horses worth about $7,000 perished while Sidney Warner, an employee, fed and watered them. he saved seven horses.
Dr Harry D Henry resigns as president of Iowa Wesleyan College citing ill health. He arrived three years ago from First Methodist church of Iowa City and completed the campaign begun by his predecessor to free Wesleyan from debt.
Shenandoah high school honor student Mary Jo Lomas 17 was crowned queen of the Shenandoah Floral Festival. Lomas, a Red Oak graduate, is a dance student in Omaha and worked on her school newspaper staff. She participated in Rainbow Girls, the class play, glee club and mixed chorus.
A crossing accident near Woodbine A killed a man identified as John Arp, about 50. A Central freight train smashed his car, scattering two cases of dynamite and two boxes of caps across the railroad right of way. none exploded. The driver died at the scene.
The weather summary reports over five inches of rain in May with three events exceeding one inch. The total precipitation for the month was 6.35 inches. Highest temperature reached 87 degrees on the 3rd, 18th, and 31st, while the low fell to 44 degrees on the 12th.
Canton suffered a large air attack as 30 Japanese planes dropped incendiaries and explosives over the city. Chinese estimates place casualties at more than 500 dead and 1,000 wounded, with fires ignited in poorer districts. The raid came from a fleet based at sea, over the international settlement. Merle Middleton former deputy sheriff and two others Lee Hubbard and Sammy Thomas were arrested on charges of conspiring to suborn perjury. They waived hearing and were released on 3000 dollar bail. The case centers on 20 coal companies and 42 individuals on trial for conspiring to keep miners from joining unions.
Hundreds of Washington youths resume learning start next Monday June 6 with daily Bible programs at Methodist United Presbyterian Trinity Lutheran and Foursquare churches. Most two week sessions with Trinity Lutheran lasting three weeks. preacher led by Rev W J Stevens aided by Mrs Helen Sage Mrs Mary Misel and Mrs Leslie Hootman. Enrollment expected about 60.
The Boy Scouts under George Mohr will hike to Big Rock Monday morning leaving Lincoln School at 8 o clock and returning about 2 pm. They should bring food for their noon meal as they spend time gathering nature information.
Agent Lewis Goodlander announces the Rock Island time card changes effective Sunday. No 1 eastbound will arrive in Washington at 11 p m instead of 11 20 p m while No 4 will arrive at 8 11 a m instead of 3 17 a m. The Golden State Limited is affected. No 43 will stop at Washington to discharge and pick up passengers for points it serves.
The report states promised rapid dispatch to China of two motorized divisions and seventy aircraft, signaling a major military reinforcement.
Washington county voters will cast ballots for state district and county offices in an eight to eight polling day. Republicans face 53 candidates in total with 35 seeking state or district posts and 18 aiming for county offices. Democrats run 12 in state and district races and five for county positions. Miss Vera W. Harvey selected by the playground committee to head younger children and girls activities this summer. She will organize games tell stories supervise craft work and supervise helpers. Harvey, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Harvey, has nine years rural teaching experience and training from Iowa State Teachers College.

Rural eighth graders in Washington county received diplomas signifying completion of county school courses at a graduation program in the Methodist church presided by County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill. Rain kept some away but the crowd remained large as Richard H. McCleery of Washington spoke on “The Trumpeter” urging students to finish what they start and to live for free speech and religious freedom. Maxine Adams presented medals to Mary Ellen Duensing and Evelyn Peck for top grades, with a banner for their schools. awards followed the diploma presentations.
Iowa safety officials announce several makes of dual-control cars for use in driver education. One unit will be displayed at Iowa State College June 14 to July 21 for a course on highway safety and driver training conducted by William Sears of Chicago Public Schools. The Ames program is led by the psychology and civil engineering departments with cooperation from the safety council and state agencies.
Iowa Democratic leaders claim Republicans may cross over to the Democratic primary to influence the vote while Republican state chairman Carl Cook appeals to GOP members to vote in their own primary Monday. Reports indicate cross over efforts centered on Senator Guy Gillette with other candidates like Wearin also drawing support from new deal Republicans.

Seven cases linked to a Kinross family reunion. several mild cases in Frytown and Cedar township. Health unit urges vaccination. all physicians to report chickenpox cases to Washington County Health Unit.

A special Washington County Safety Council meeting in the G A R room outlined objectives: study traffic signs, sponsor rural safety education with Farm Bureau, promote bicycle traffic safety through clubs ordinances and publicity, and cooperate with the Chamber of Commerce for Fall Festival safety. A follow up meeting is planned in two weeks to refine details. Dr. Fred L. Moore ends a several week vacation at his parents Mr and Mrs Fred J Moore home and departs this morning to begin work in Cincinnati Ohio.
