Termite swarms warned as heat arrives in Iowa counties
Washington County extension director Jim Frier notes termites swarm in warm weather and threaten wood in homes. Entomologist Jerry DeWitt explains winged termites emerge from soil nests, resemble winged ants, and can enter rooms attracted to light. Professional treatment with a long lasting insecticide barrier around foundations is advised to prevent entry and maintain indoor conditions. Reports of termite problems span Tama to Montgomery counties. Insurance payouts for disability last year reached about 2.4 billion, $247 million higher than the year before.
