Sheriff's officers investigated a break-in near Keota early Saturday. Stolen items included stereo equipment jewelry antiques and other goods from Steve Thompson's rural Keota home. A partial value of about 5000 was cited. Entry appeared to come through a back door. No suspects named.
The Washington Public Library starts a six week Story Hour on Monday for kindergarten to second graders from 1 to 2 p.m. Grades three to five begin on Wednesday to 9 June, 1 to 2 p.m. From Friday 11 June, both groups join special programs at 1 p.m. The theme is Be Wise Read. Sessions are free and open to the public.
Nearly 7,283 registered voters in Washington County await next Tuesday's primary with many races unopposed. Polls open 7 am to 9 pm in 20 of 22 precincts. Changes include Cedar Township polling at John Patterson residence garage and Washington second ward voters at the old Highway Commission garage. Key races feature Sheriff Yale Jarvis vs Robert Swift. other GOP and Democratic nominees are incumbents. Party affiliation required for no party registrants to vote.
United Press International reports Senator Hubert Humphrey, after saying he would not seek the presidency, now says he would run if Carter falters in the Ohio New Jersey and California primaries. Carter warns a Humphrey nomination would divide the party, while Reagan Ford Udall Brown Wallace campaign across key states amid economic signals and strategic moves.
SAN CLEMENTE Calif UPI chief aide retired Marine Col Jack Brennan served notice Friday on publishing agent Scott Meredith that 22 letters supposedly written by Nixon to an unnamed woman should be treated as forgeries Three London newspapers reported Meredith had obtained the letters alleging Nixon had a lengthy affair with the wife of a European diplomat while still in the White House Brennan said the letters are part of a sordid hoax.
In Kingston a 300 year old Bradford House suffered about 1000 dollars in damage in an arson attempt. Authorities say security is being increased at historic sites as tourism may fall during the Bicentennial year. Nearby Plymouth saw a bomb blast near Plymouth Rock Tuesday night and Boston reported a suspicious fire causing seventy five thousand dollars damage to the Tea Party Museum Saturday.

Auditions for the Summer Creative Arts and Drama main production will be June 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Allan Lemke directs Max Frisch 1955 play The Chinese Wall, a time bending drama with historical and fictional figures. Performances are July 23 and 24 in the WHS auditorium. Merrill Lynch agreed to pay over 1.9 million in back pay to minorities and women and set aside 1.3 million for an affirmative action program over five years. The settlement resolves a 1973 Pittsburgh hiring discrimination suit by Helen O Bannon, now a state regulator, after EEOC involvement. The deal, formalized in Pittsburgh federal court, requires outreach and potential back pay for applicants denied since 1971.
The Mental Health Association of Iowa warns it will file a court action if Governor Ray does not abandon Mount Pleasant as the site for a medium-security prison. The group says the plan disrupts mental health services and violates patients rights under last year's commitment law.

Independence dealer A L Olson faces charges for selling 90 head and 74 head of cattle with false weight and origin claims. Authorities say the fraud may extend beyond Iowa with phony weight tickets and inflated trucking charges.
A Washington County District Court jury upheld the 1970 will of Mrs. Jessie White, finding she was of sound mind and not unduly influenced by executor Mary Carolyn Owens. Plaintiffs Glenn Palmer, Lola Palmer, and Glenda Reynolds sought to invalidate the will which leaves Owens as executor and primary beneficiary of about 40,000 dollars. the trial lasted four days.
Timothy John Brashaw of Washington pleaded guilty in Washington County District Court to larceny and Judge L R Carson set sentencing for June 23. Brashaw, 21, was arrested at his home after a theft of a CB radio valued at 100 dollars from Don Drelt. He is held on 10000 dollar bond with other charges likely. In other cases Jacqueline M Flake pleaded guilty to an OMVUS charge with sentencing set for June 23. James Leonard Bowen entered not guilty pleas on two larceny charges.
