Edsall Brown marks the end of the eighth year at Brown's Courtesy Corner, a Cities Service station opposite the State theatre. The business began June 1 1944 after Brown and Don Orr operated jointly from 1929 to 1942, with Brown later buying Orr’s share and rebranding. Dick Yoder assists in retailing Cities Service products alongside tires, batteries, and auto accessories.
Mervil A. Schiefelbein, 89, of Waterloo, was charged with manslaughter after a May 26 highway crash on U.S. 65 south of Hudson killed Carl W. Morgan, 18, of Waterloo, and Roy Shasstal, 62, of Grundy Center. Schiefelbein said steering failure. investigators found no defects in the steering.
Otto Kudart, 56, of Runnels, was killed Friday when a dirt mound about 15 feet wide and 12 to 14 feet high buried him while workers placed a pipe at a Des Moines River levee to drain their fares. He died at a Des Moines hospital.

Police seek two young gunmen who robbed Couchman Wilson drug store in Des Moines on Friday night escaping with about 1400. Roy Wilson, part owner, said the suspects lunched with customers then assaulted him and a woman clerk. A scuffle occurred after a gun was flashed and one bandit shouted a threat.
Aerojet-General Corp disclosed that the Aerobee sounding rocket reached 90 miles altitude at White Sands New Mexico. The 2-foot rocket carries 150 pounds of instruments in nearly vertical flight and may reach over 130 miles with a booster. Aerobee launches have been conducted by the Naval Ordnance Missile Test Group.
Mr. Ziegler of the State Highway Commission outlined surfacing of highway one between Washington and Kalona and reported grading and relocation contracts already let. He expects completion by fall with more contracts next year and pledged caution signs at the Waco Drive I O theater entrance. County Supervisor Benn said the English River bridge south of Riverside is ahead of schedule and the Wayland to Crawfordsville gravel project will finish this year.

Des Moines Ohio Senator Bricker doubts any side can force a definitive end to the Army McCarthy clash. He cites the hearings as an unusual sequence of events and urges closer cooperation between legislative and executive branches.
