Two men nabbed a headgear and boxing gloves from a San Francisco training quarters. Police vow to nab the culprits as the owner urges quick action and more practice for the thieves before they are caught.
French Union forces retreat from Cho Noi in Indochina after a week of heavy Communist attacks. Rebels also seize a Catholic village coop and seminary along the Hanoi Haiphong lifeline as French airstrikes and artillery fail to hold ground.
Secretary of State Dulles told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Indochina’s crisis endangers U.S. and Pacific allies as Communist China and Soviet arms boost Red forces. He cited Geneva talks as uncertain and noted progress and delays in European defense efforts, with France and Italy yet to ratify the EDC treaty.
Rev Earl Longfellow of the First Baptist church will speak at the opening Union park service in Central Park at 7:20 pm weather permitting. Artemas Brown of the YMCA assists, with music directed by Mrs Charles McConnell. If rain, services move to the Methodist church in June.

The Washington chamber board met at the William Sitler home. Mrs. Robert Swift reported on the visitation program and urged Washington residents to call 400 about newcomers. R. K. E. Shannon noted the Washington Home Association is $12 900 from its goal and clarified the home is a supportive housing option. A planning committee of the president and two past presidents was formed to shape the chamber program.
Senate investigators cleared the way to publish some Army Secretary Stevens telephone talks with McCarthy aides if individual senators choose. Most transcripts were ruled out as impractical and no dates or lists were provided, while Welch and McCarthy agreed to limit public releases to calls involving senators only.
Four second string Communists convicted of conspiracy under the Smith Act were sentenced to five years each by U.S. District Judge Roy W. Harper. A fifth defendant, Mrs Dorothy Forest, received three years. Harper showed sympathy for the mother. All five may appeal bond pending appeal after conviction for conspiring to advocate violent overthrow of the government.

Two Columbus Junction residents were hospitalized after their car overturned about one mile east of the Highway 2 and 218 junction. George Newton Duncan and Lilly Duncan were treated at Washington county hospital after the eastbound car tried to pass a semi and clipped a truck before overturning on the south side of the road. Damage to the Duncan auto was estimated at about $100.
Glastonbury resident J. William Purtil, a charter member of the Board of Police Commissioners, left his car on the street overnight after a breakdown and said he was happy to pay the ticket, noting it shows police are doing a fine job.
New Haven Connecticut Albert Schulz age 101 broke a hip in a fall from bed and was hospitalized claiming it was the first time in his life he had needed medical care.
Police seek explanation for the disappearance of John Casey senior of Des Moines feared to be a victim of foul play. Casey, a retired railroad conductor, was last seen March 5 at a bus depot with about 2000 dollars in cash and valuables. he did not board a bus to Douds. He owned property in Iowa and a ranch in Hysham Montana.
LeRoy Gore founder of the Joe Must Go movement races to hit the 468804 signature deadline by midnight Saturday to force a recall of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. Gore, editor and former McCarthy supporter, says he has a grim fighting chance as about 375000 signatures have been collected statewide amid a Madison origin speech to 6782 people.
Vacation Bible school at the United Presbyterian Church begins Monday at 9 am. Miss Dyer directs the two week program with four departments and pre registrations showing strong interest. Mrs Raymond Gordon leads music while Mary Dyer oversees the school.
The Senate Appropriations Committee restored virtually all of a $63.6 million House cut in Interior Department funding for fiscal 1955. Its total for public land, reclamation, Indian service and related programs reached $326.6 million, with boosts to reclamation construction and park funding and larger Indian services allotments.
John R. Williams 74 of Crawfordsville died at 7 15 p m Thursday at his home after a period of illness. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Saturday at Zion Congregational Church with Rev Joseph Carswell officiating. Burial will be in Cambrian Cemetery. He was born September 19 1879 in Montgomery County Iowa and married Margaret Jones December 22 1904 near Crawfordsville. The couple farmed near Columbus Jet and later White Gate Farm before moving to Crawfordsville in 1945. He served as Zion Congregational Church trustee and is survived by his wife two sons Russell and Howard and seven grandchildren.
Martelle Iowa farmer Jack Orr thirty one was killed Thursday when his car collided with a westbound Milwaukee Hiawatha streamliner at a crossing west of Martelle He was thrown from the car and died at the scene He was survived by his wife and four children.
