Two men named John Henderson and Ernest Brown were sentenced to 30 days in the workhouse as suspicious persons. Police said they entered a local store and tried to cash a check made out to Kikuye Ishimatsu, claiming they were from Tibet.
Farmers are urged to attend a weed and brush control and pasture tour sponsored by the Washington County Beet Producers Association on Wednesday. Extension specialists from Iowa State College and local agronomists will lead morning and afternoon sessions at multiple farms focusing on fertility, alfalfa, trefoil pastures and livestock forage costs.
Representative Sidney Yates charged the Eisenhower housing bill offers little hope for solving the housing shortage. He argued clearing slums with $39 million this year would take 85 years and called the 35,000 public housing units per year plan inadequate. He doubted House passage after the Senate approval.

Le Roy Gore, leader of the Joe Must Go recall drive in Wisconsin, says petitions lack enough signatures to trigger a recall election. He plans another attempt after November elections and states warrants may be issued to seize the petitions. Gore would go to jail rather than surrender them.
Eight persons died in Iowa traffic accidents weekend. In Des Moines a two week old baby, Daniel Bussanmas, died after his father's car hit a parked vehicle on a viaduct. parents and another child were injured. An unidentified man, about 55, was killed on U S 75 near Corneal Bluffs. Jack Harshberger, 23, was involved.
Iowans vote in a six man GOP governor primary with a possible June convention decision. Secretary of State Lyndhorst predicts about 340000 votes as interest centers on the contest amid light turnout and a 35 percent quota to win. Several incumbents face no opposition in other races as the field narrows toward a possible new nominee.
Six rare Korean postage stamps commemorating Seoul YMCA’s 50th anniversary are offered by the Washington Y’s Men’s club through William Brown’s Children’s Wonderland store. Stamps, limited in quantity, will be auctioned to Washington collectors with bids accepted through next Saturday night. Proceeds support Rangi Island Boy's Town in Korea.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lizze Ellen Kuntz 88 of 220 North Seventh Street will be held Tuesday at 1 30 p m in the Powersville Missouri Methodist church with Dr W J Stevens in charge. Burial in Powersville. She died Sunday afternoon after 314 months illness. She was born March 20 1864 in Selma Iowa and lived in Washington 26 years. Survivors include sons Harry and Roy Kuntz and daughter Mrs Vera Hysell all of Washington with 17 grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by son Robert Glen and daughter Mrs Fern Crawford. Burial will be in Powersville Missouri.

Tait will lead the Wednesday fishing school May June 9 at 6 pm with anglers and officers assisting. program focuses on crappie bass and catfish techniques for all ages.
In Abingdon Virginia neighbors brought 15 tractors to help farmer Robert Bebber while he cared for his ill mother. In three hours they plowed the 17 acre field, showing local solidarity and swift community action.
George Margulies a Davenport auto dealer pleaded no defense in Federal Court to evading payment of 512,294 in federal income taxes for 1948 1949 and 1950. The government dropped charges he evaded part of his 1947 personal tax and that he as Black Hawk Chevrolet Co president caused fraudulent returns for 1947 1948 1949 1950. Judge William F. Riley tentatively set June 25 for sentencing.
Virginia Stubbs 24 Beverly Blakeman 25 Eva Tague mother were held on charges of trying to rob a guardianship fund for Stubbs child. Forgery and conspiracy charges tied to a $2000 check arose as investigations recovered about $2000 in cash and merchandise from trust fund checks. The fund supported one of Stubbs four children after a truck accident killed one husband.
A dog owned by Leo Robertson of Riverside won top prize in the Southeast Iowa Dog show for coon and fox hounds held Sunday at Lake Odessa. Paul Rotenburger of Riverside won second prize in the all age male division. Rotenburger is a director of the Chicago Izaak Walton chapter. Thirty dogs were entered.
Washington county 4 H girls meet at 1 p m Tuesday in the Wellman high school gymnasium for the annual Rally Day program with county president Mary Coriese in charge. The afternoon program includes initiation of an honorary member, skits, folk dances and special events.
Milford Blair Shettier of Wellman, 59, drove west on highway 22 east of Kalona at 9 50 p m Sunday and struck a 550 pound sow owned by William Spenner. He could not stop in time. car damage estimated at 500 dollars. Richard Meyers of Wellman was a passenger.
Washington UPI reports Army Secretary Robert T. Stevens told Roy M. Cohn last fall that he wanted to uncover anything relating to subversion at Fort Monmouth New Jersey. The transcripts of six monitored calls between Cohn and Stevens were released during hearings on the Army McCarthy row. The talks reveal a friendly tone that later cooled when Army McCarthy disputes intensified. Stevens discussed possibly removing Maj. Gen. Richard C Partridge as chief of Army intelligence, a move that occurred about seven weeks later on Nov 15 1953.
Lake Darling Youth Center gears up for the 1954 camping season with most facilities finished. Artemas Brown says the cook’s cabin Camp Fire cabin and administration building are complete while the sanitary building should be finished soon. Washington Y’s Men’s club volunteers will work Tuesday from 9 a.m. onward cleaning grounds painting and installing beds and will join a 6:30 p.m. dinner.
Five members of a Wellman family were jailed in Washington county on larceny charges after turkeys were stolen. Arrest followed when the turkey owner trailed the group to their home and notified the sheriff. Bond was set at 3000 dollars each for Wilkie J. Eilders Velma M. Eilders Jake Henry Eilders and two juvenile family members.
Edna McCoy 23 pleaded innocent to assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury in connection with the beating of her 5 year old niece Paula Pieres. Paula is hospitalized in critical condition with a brain concussion skull fracture and a cast on her right arm.
Eight men and two women were killed when two cars collided on a hill near Dunkirk Maryland. Police said the impact was so severe both vehicles burst into flames and most passengers were thrown free with no survivors. The fatalities include four youths from Silver Spring and an unknown youth in one car and a Baltimore couple along with two men and a woman from Olivet in the other.
Tickets for an eight film series for children, from pre school to high school, cost 1 dollar and are sold at State theater in Washington. First show National Velvet on June 14 at 2 30 pm with other titles listed through August 9. Tickets must be picked up by next Monday and available noon to 1 pm and 2 to 4 pm.
