In Lebanon Connecticut a cow named Elsie had been ill for a week with doctors unsure of the diagnosis. A mine detector revealed the cow had swallowed six pieces of wire fence. Surgeons removed the wire and Elsie recovered to contented status.
In a Washington statement Senator Robert A Taft rejects a go it alone stance and argues for military alliance building in the Far East. He says the United States could form an alliance with Britain and relies on NATO style cooperation while criticizing UN veto power and indicating the UN has failed to prevent aggression. He cites treaties with Australia New Zealand Japan and the Philippines and a French understanding in Indochina as a basis for greater allied action.
The first union park service of the season will be in Central Park this Sunday evening with Rev. Milo J. Phillips of St. Pauls Evangelical and Reformed Church preaching on A Venture of Faith. The June to August schedule lists weekly hosts among local churches and a rain alternative at United Presbyterian Church.
A revised schedule begins Monday June 8 with trash and garbage collected on the same day by a city truck under the landfill method. Collections occur three times weekly in downtown areas and once weekly in other sections, with separate containers for trash and garbage.

Treasury Undersecretary Marion B. Folsom said a Korean truce would not affect President Eisenhower’s request to extend the excess profits tax. House Ways and Means members noted opposition from Chairman Reed and Rep Mason while Folsom defended the program and his lobbying efforts with business groups.
Ernest Gile 39 Des Moines was arraigned on threatening to commit a public offense after his wife Laura 35 said she leaped from a third floor window to escape. She suffered a broken arm and injuries. Gile pleaded innocent and a June 11 trial was set with $2000 bond.
Baptist church hosts a Vacation Bible School from June through June 19 excluding Saturdays. Open to children ages 4 through eighth grade. Carol Forgey will lead the program.
Bob Poyser arrived in Washington to assume duties as manager of the McLellan store, replacing W D Johnson who transferred to Kokomo Indiana. Poyser has six years with the company and comes from Platteville Wisconsin where he was a store manager. Mrs Poyser and two children Dick and Carole will move to Washington once a home is rented, with Dick entering second grade. The family’s original home was in South Bend Indiana.
Summer Vacation Bible school at Christian Tabernacle runs weekdays 9 to 11 45 a m from Monday to Friday through June 19 supervised by Mrs Bill Arnold Bible stories songs handwork and crafts theme Our Place In God World invites all children ages 4 to 14 to attend.
A supporter of Premier Alcide de Gasperi died from injuries inflicted by a leftist as police prepared to avert further violence at final rallies ahead of Sunday's parliamentary elections. The five week campaign ends by midnight, with weather forecasts predicting unsettled conditions likely to dampen turnout.
About 100 juvenile dog owners picketed city hall in Council Bluffs to block a dog control ordinance. The council voted to confine all dogs from May 1 to Sept 1 each year. The boys carried placards and protested inside and outside the hall, but the vote stood firm.
Former teachers and pupils of Indian Creek school will hold their annual reunion on June 14. The event occurs each year on the second Sunday in June and takes place at the Indian Creek school.
Washington county invites teen drivers to Townsley park on Saturday June 13 starting at 9 a.m. The event, sponsored by the Washington Jaycees, features a driving course and a common sense exam. In Kearny New Jersey sixteen year old Claus Eischen was sentenced to life in prison by Superior Court Judge John Drewen for murdering his parents. He shot them as they slept last October and was arrested two weeks later in Miami Florida. Eischen said he fired bullets in their heads because they nagged him about low marks in school.
Raymond Rex Dawson pled guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated before Judge J G Patterson. He was fined 300 dollars and costs, his drivers license suspended for 90 days, and he remained confined in the county jail.
Daily Vacation Bible school opens at the Methodist church Monday June at 9 a.m. and runs daily 9 to 11 a.m. through June 18. Classes serve children from kindergarten to sixth grade. Ruth Simpson is general superintendent. Keith Vetter leads kindergarten, Leslie Dunlap primary, and Daryl Tucker junior classes.
Authorities warned 3,000 more residents to evacuate as the Missouri River rose behind flood swollen tributaries. About 2,200 people have already left homes in Belt Monarch and nearby areas, with towns and farms near water records nearly submerged. Airman Lowell Jones reported Belt Creek impact and a railroad trestle near Belt and Monarch nearly bent into a semicircle as the Big Muddy floods intensify. The U.S. Weather Bureau forecasts the river rising four to six inches today between Cascade and Great Falls, marking the region’s worst flood event.
Representatives of thirty state press associations will arrive in Ontario June 9 for the tenth annual goodwill tour. Louis P. Iowa public health records show 32 polio cases through May 30 this year, double the 16 reported through May 1952. Three new cases last week were from O'Brien Plymouth and Woodbury counties, with May totaling 14 cases vs six in 1952. Doctors now report paralytic versus non paralytic forms. last week’s three were non paralytic, though progression is possible.
The Methodist church will mark Couples Sunday next Sunday in June the peak wedding season. The pastor will deliver a sermon themed Ah Sweet Mystery of Life to honor the day and its spirit of couples and marriage.

All eighth grade graduates in Washington county are invited to a get acquainted dance at the Washington Youth Center Saturday June 6 at 8 p.m. The event will be held in the Youth Center above the McLellan store on the east side of the square. Eighth grade guests will be admitted free.
All but three members of the Apache tribe met at the YMCA Thursday evening for a swim a ming party. After swimming, the group moved to Sunset Park for a wiener roast.
