In Norwalk California a nervous but stubborn bandit pistol whipped a gas station attendant Paul G. Cook and forced the attendant to surrender $186 after threatening to beat his head in. The gunman trembled violently as his rifle cylinder popped open during the hold up.
Teakoslovakia's president promised a new paradise but the people now face a drastic currency shake down. Citizens must exchange crowns for new currency at banks, with fifty to one hundred fifty crowns traded for one new unit. Wages fall sharply, prices are cut unevenly, and many savings and government securities become worthless. An extra decree tightens control as readers are directed to continue on page 8.
President Eisenhower in a White House television address assures the nation there will be no appeasement of Communism in Korea and no risk of a modern war, while defending a measured path to peace. He emphasizes a strong but logical defense program and calm public nerves amid armistice talks at Panmunjom.

Mrs Blanche Aughey formerly Blanche Patterson dies at 71 in Des Moines Iowa Funeral services were held there with interment in Mitchellville. She was daughter of J and Patterson and a Washington High School graduate Two daughters and a brother Roy Patterson of Hopkinton survive.
Clare Griffin mourns the death of his father Alvin James Griffin who died Tuesday in Winfield from a heart attack. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 10 a m at Barton funeral home with survivors including Eldon Griffin of Council Bluffs Bertha Griffin of near Portland Ore and Dr Milton Griffin of Morning Sun.
Funeral services for Maynard C. Ayers 43 will be held Friday at 2 p m in Wellman Baptist church. Burial will follow in Sharon Hill cemetery Kalona. Ayers died Wednesday morning at Veterans hospital Iowa City after a life that included service in the U S Army in Europe. He was born January 28 1910 in Kalona and married October 21 1939 to Vivian Sueppel. He is survived by his wife his parents six brothers and five sisters from Wellman and nearby towns.
Great Falls Montana braces as flood waters from the Missouri and Sun Rivers threaten isolation of about 40000 residents. A crest expected within hours to days could force mass evacuations while Belt Creek overruns Belt Montana. Mayor Moore warns conditions worsen with drinking water cut and widespread inundation. Governor Aronson poised to issue a disaster proclamation.

The Iowa Employment Security Commission says refunds for former public employees will be available around July 1 with application blanks at state employment service offices. Payments to those who left public jobs start about October 1, while current employees opting out of the old plan will see refunds delayed to January 1. About 80 000 former workers are eligible. refunds are 75 percent of contributions with no interest, while quitters after July 4 receive 2 percent interest.
Mrs. Lena Chance received a telegram from Mrs. Mae Townsley reporting the death of Mrs. Chance's uncle, Joe Dailey, in Iola Kansas this morning. Mr. Dailey was the brother of Mrs. Townsley.
The Atomic Energy Commission capped spring tests with a massive atomic blast 2000 feet above Yucca Flat Las Vegas observers said the flash lit the sky from Canada to Mexico and winds hid the blast from Las Vegas 65 miles away. A B 36 dropped the core device and a B 50 dropped conventional seeds to model forecasts. One Las Vegas resident went temporarily blind and another timed the blast by watch light for 1 minute 22 seconds.
Washington officials say deferred youths who serve in the national guard are eligible for the draft until age 35, extending the usual 26 year limit. The ruling places 18 year olds who enlist in the guard and serve to 26 back under draft liability, aligning them with other registrants.
Henry W. Grunewald known as The Dutchman received a 90 day suspended jail term and a 1600 dollar fine after pleading guilty to one count of contempt of congress. Federal Judge Alexander Holtzoff cited his reliance on legal counsel in the tax scandal inquiry.
Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr says a big majority of House members will vote to extend the excess profits tax on corporations from June 30 to December 31 if given the chance. He spoke after a White House meeting with President Eisenhower and congressional leaders. He expects Ways and Means Committee backing to offer the bill as part of the President’s tax program.

Cold Springs in Cass county is 12 acres with bass and bluegill, previously open to bullhead only.
Gordon Dean announced a successful demonstration of atomic breeding at Idaho's reactor test site, predicting fuel resources could be multiplied more than 100 times. He outlined private industry access plans, a five year developmental window, and cautioned that breeding remains slow and not yet perfected.
The Agriculture Department asked Congress for permission to cut 1954 crop wheat plantings by 16 million acres about 20 percent. The House Agriculture Committee weighs a bill to cap the cut at 12 million acres about 15 percent. Under current law large surpluses trigger 30 percent quotas. this year’s plan would imply about 23 million acres.

Mrs William Johnson, 79, of Newhall, was hospitalized with first and second degree burns after a bottled gas stove exploded in the basement. The blast shattered windows while she fled upstairs and rolled on the ground to extinguish flames. Her husband, upstairs, escaped injury.
