State engineers are in Washington county to conduct an additional survey of a proposed artificial lake site in Dutch Creek township. They will assess soil for water retention and rock suitability while seeking funds to buy land for construction planned this year. The effort faces financing as the major hurdle.
Members of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs decorated graves at Woodlawn Cemetery and Elm Grove for the memorial service. The Rebekah drill featured sixteen members under Mrs Hilma Larson, with Ralph Zeck presiding at the service and Eva Diller Velda Parcell performing vocal pieces.
Mrs. EB. R. Harvey reports the death of her cousin Miss Grace Glasgow at her Seattle home. Grace Glasgow died suddenly on Tuesday May 30. She was born in Jackson township Washington county to B. B. and Mary Stever Glasgow. A sister Rue Glasgow Archer survives and she was a half sister of Will Glasgow who died in Whittier California recently.
Mrs. B C Hillis of Oelwein promotes retention of the prohibitory amendment across multiple towns including West Chester Kalona Wellman New Haven and Fayette county. She argues prohibition has advanced society and warns that legalized liquor would yield less revenue than its cost.
Rev Henry Knebel aged 60 pastor of St Josephs church Ft Madison died at 1 30 am Saturday after injuries from a May auto accident. Born Riverside May 12 1873 he was ordained in 1903 in St Louis and served in Davenport Tipton and Ft Madison. Funeral will be at St Josephs with Bishop Henry Rohlman officiating. Surviving are six brothers.
Des Moines reports Milo Reno said there will probably be no national farm strike before autumn after a conference yesterday. He indicated no action before fall and suggested further talks to resolve farm labor issues.
Miss Agnes Samuelson state superintendent of public instruction will deliver the graduation address for 141 Washington county rural school pupils at the Methodist church Thursday evening June 8.
Dr W S Bovard of Chicago urged full church attendance to energize missions and donations during morning services. Evening program by Wellman group presented The Ten Virgins to raise funds for Mt Pleasant institute delegates.
Washington listeners heard Dr Charlies R Brown born northwest of Washington deliver the baccalaureate sermon to the graduating class of the State University of Iowa. Fifty years after his own graduation he spoke on the theme Finding Ourselves. He urged the graduates to find themselves accept themselves and be themselves.
Leaders of the movement on May 12 postponed a planned strike set for the following day, citing new negotiations and a desire to avoid disruption. The decision shifts leverage as organizers seek fresh talks with authorities.
In Dallas on June 5, Governor Miriam Ferguson and her husband James Ferguson refused to breakfast with Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt after she declined to pose for a group photo. Photographers were told Mrs Roosevelt did not wish to appear in pictures, and the Fergusons left the area after an extended refusal.

Hugh Alexander Hamil of Ainsworth dies suddenly from apoplexy at his home. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 PM in United Presbyterian church Ainsworth with Rev F Sharpe officiating. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Born October 29 1855 he lived most of his life in Ainsworth with brief times in Kansas and Missouri. Survived by James Hamil Margaret J Hamil Elizabeth H McConnell Isabel Keiper and several siblings with one brother and two sisters deceased.
Mrs Everett Ward and her two sons are visiting in Newton to see Mrs Ward’s mother, Mrs J T Riek.
National Flower Shut-in Day will be observed in Washington and other cities on Saturday June 10. Shut-ins hospital inpatients disabled veterans and crippled children will receive complimentary bouquets to bring happiness. Dorothea Antel of New York City will receive the first flowers in recognition of her cheerful spirit.
Chicago voters show nine to five support for repeal but dry leaders concede defeat while veterans forecast a three to one majority against the 18th amendment. Indiana votes tomorrow and Nevada later in the week.

James Mattern lands in Moscow after a long Atlantic crossing and plans to resume his round the world flight toward Novosibirak Siberia. He flew 1100 miles from Osteo to Moscow in seven hours and endured a rough night over the Baltic and a day on a Norwegian island.

Attorneys for 20 O'Brien county farmers on trial for contempt of court argued the foreclosure sale was illegal because it included the execution of three judgments in one act. Judge Earl Veters took the motion under advisement.
Washington June 5. President Roosevelt urged Congress to leave the veterans program intact or raise 170000000 in new taxes. Indications today suggest an impending battle over veterans compensation will delay adjournment of Congress at least three weeks.
