City Treasurer W. McCardle received 8300 from Cassi C. Lenzinger of Dallas Texas. She explains she spent a year in Los Angeles jail six years ago for attempted forgery and says no bill was issued for expenses. She credits the city's good care in jail and extends goodwill.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezyra TT. Benson told dairy farmers in Chicago that intensive research and public relations can lift them from economic trouble. Speaking at a June Dairy Month luncheon, he warned the distribution system lagged behind production gains and urged decisive action to reduce reliance on subsidies.
Freakish weather battered the central U.S. for the fourth straight day. A tornado near Paris Texas injured 10 people eight from one family while Loretta Cooper 14 suffered serious injuries. Des Moines trucker Marvin Myer, 31, cited by the Iowa Motor Truck Association as driver of the month for an eight year accident free record and for rescuing Donald Sparks, 34, from a burning cab after Sparks’ truck overturned on a highway south of Ottumwa last April 20. Myer pulled Sparks through a 10 inch opening.
Mel Hill announces 105 students enrolled in the Summer Band program at the high school starting Monday June 7. Registration continues at rehearsals or with Mr. Hill. Schedule covers multiple bands and lessons through midweek with 28 students in private lessons notified by mail.

Mr and Mrs Jim Steggall proprietors of the White Front Cafe observe their first business anniversary this Friday and Saturday. Mrs Steggall the former Wilda Busby of Washington was a home economics teacher at the local high school. Mr Steggall cooked for 30 years and has run his own business five years. Since opening last year they added new front tables remodeled the kitchen and had the air conditioner revised. They came to Washington from Oelwein.
John FE Springman 75 of Palo Alto California died Sunday May 30 after a short illness. A 1904 08 academy graduate and 1900 Stanford Law School alumnus he served as Mindanao governor under Taft in the Philippines. Survived by son John of Los Angeles and daughter Martha a biology professor in Salem Oregon.
Director Tom Robb announced a county wide weed and brush control pasture tour set for Wednesday June 9. Dutch Sylvester from Iowa State College will join the morning session at 10 am on George Tripp farm to review weed and brush control with pastures bluegrass and brush spraying demonstrated in April. The afternoon session at the same farm will feature Ralph Krenzin and Bill Oschwald as they lead tours of southwest county pastures including alfalfa clipping and legume rotation with Birdsfoot Trefoil pasture.
Geneva reports say France will decide troop reinforcements to Indochina based on a written American promise of aerial retaliation against any Russian or Red Chinese air attack. Paris wants this pledge to be formal and clear to prevent verbal ambiguities.

4 H camp at Lake Darling set for June 15 16 and 17 with fees due at the extension office by Saturday. Only boys not more than 14 years old as of January 1 1954 are eligible. Activities include nature studies crafts swimming lessons and outdoor cookery with Antone Hotle Harvey Timmons Jim Wagenknecht and Raymond Bonar as on site camp committeemen.
Mrs. Robert Swift connects Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Evans of 1002 E. 4th and Mrs. Alice Smith of 602 N. Iowa. The Evans recently moved from Richland Iowa via Washington. They have two children Hubert eight and Lonnie seven. Frank Lukovsky lives with them. They favor the Methodist church while Mrs. Smith prefers the Baptist church and enjoys sewing and dancing. Mrs. Smith and her children moved from Davenport.
Democrats introduced legislation to extend unemployment compensation from 26 to 39 weeks. The bill in both House and Senate would raise the minimums to at least 66 percent of state averages and 50 percent of the individual’s weekly wage, boosting benefits in many states.
Howard Greiner, Wellman area farmer and ammonia businessman, told Y’s Men club that corn production of 300 bushels to the acre is possible on good black lawn soil. He cited a past season where soils were improved and yields exceeded 100 bushels per acre after soil treatment and ammonia experiments. He also discussed plans for a soil testing lab and a local ammonia plant to streamline supply. Bob Day served as program chairman.
The Fairfield blaze destroyed a business house after sparks from a welder's torch in the basement of the Joe Coffman sporting goods and appliance shop. Coffman said stock was packed for transfer and still in the building. insurance covered part of the loss. Firemen noted a welder's torch used Tuesday and the fire reported around 3 45 p.m. Wednesday. No damage estimates yet.
