In Cedar Rapids Mrs. E Lillick reports a $40 pit fold stolen from her living room. Detectives Bailey and Marshall gain consent to search and locate the pocket book in a cupboard. Pleasant city authorizes a dog catcher and a humane society supervised pound to house unclaimed dogs. Grinnell notes Harry L Hopkins will attend Grinnell college graduation ceremonies and the twenty fifth anniversary of his class.
Mrs Henry Appel of Morrison made her first solo flight in an airplane owned by her husband, owner of the Grundy Center airport. She is the first Grundy County woman to fly solo.
MARSHALLTOWN Mrs Ma belle McAllister 38 wife of a farmer two miles from Laurel was found dead in her garden believed killed by accidental discharge of a small shotgun. She leaves a 10 year old son. She had gone to the garden to shoot a rabbit.
Ottumwa physician J. E. Wilkinson, aged 100, plans to be out of bed for his birthday observance Sunday. He has been confined after a fall but will celebrate with family, sharing the milestone with his father, mother, and sister who also lived to 100. A lifelong Democrat, he voted Republican last year.
A new strike wave in Detroit shuts five auto plants affecting about 223,000 workers. Chrysler Jefferson and Chrysler-Kercheval plants close. Dodee and Plymouth stay open. Packard and Fisher body strikes threaten further layoffs. officials seek rapid settlements. Amy Christian to spend summer in Decorah.
C. J. Ruxlow, new meat department head at Johnson's Grocery and Market, comes from a country store seven miles north of Fairfield. He and his wife will move with sons Robert and Donald to 607 South Iowa Avenue around July first. The family attends Catholic church.
Samuel Wittmer declares that many world problems need solutions as he reflects on education values. He thanks parents and teachers, notes lessons in science, economics, and ethics, and urges responsibility as graduates face ongoing challenges and discoveries.
Dr D D Welch president of Dubuque University spoke at the Washington high school and junior college commencement in the Methodist church auditorium. He mixed humor with practical wisdom and delivered what was described as one of the best commencement addresses heard locally. The ceremony honored 81 high school graduates and 15 junior college graduates with diplomas. names appear on page two.
The Washington community packed the church for a yearly event. High school seniors filled the choir loft in white and new suits, with junior college graduates in caps and gowns taking space on the pulpit platform. A Rev Carl W Klein invocation preceded a short display by seniors including Maxine Allen and Ruth Dupuis.
Raymond Tucker and George Norman of Washington pleaded guilty to larceny in the night. Each was sentenced by Judge J A Patterson to six months in the county jail for stealing soy beans from a farmer northwest of town. Harley Noel faced assault with intent to commit bodily injury. he pleaded not guilty and was bound over to the September term. Court adjourned after two days with plans to reconvene June 16.
Three masked men blasted the South English post office safe with dynamite like glycerine at 3 a.m. causing a $25 to $30 cash loss. They fired at W. E. Dunn, a carriage man, as he ran outside. the robbers fled in a car after jimmying two locks and entering the office.
A Pacific Greyhound bus overturned on a highway 40 miles north of Redding killing nine aboard and the driver. Passengers and crew were trapped as the vehicle caught fire in the wreck.
Postmaster MCC DeLong announced today that a supply of the new five cent army and navy stamps has been received locally. The attractive stamps are expected to be popular with local stamp collectors.
The city PT A sponsors a summer round up of children entering kindergarten next fall. Physical and dental examinations will be given next Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 1 to 5 o'clock. Children may be taken to their family physicians to complete the examinations.
Miss Ruth Stewart leads string instruction at the summer music school opening June 14 at the high school. Enrollment remains open for Violin and Cello sections with lists of students including Barbara Witterman Doris Custer Edith Gillespie Charles Durst and others. Viola and String Orchestra slots also available.
Joe Wright of Washington County becomes the first local to obtain adequate grasshopper poison bait to cover a large acreage. The bait will be used on a Wright farm near the south city limits. County Agent W. J. Roudabush warns many farmers underestimate the grasshopper threat as young hoppers hatch on county edges, potentially destroying 60 to 80 percent of crops.
Judge Hubert Utterback of Des Moines named to the state parole board to succeed the late Matt Cooney of Dubuque. Utterback, former district judge and former congressman, was appointed by Governor Kraschel and had opposed Senator Herring in the prior nomination race.
President Roosevelt voiced dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court for a four month summer recess without rulings in TVA PWA and SEC cases. He urged a summer special term if needed and warned of a six month to over a year delay, while declining to discuss compromises. He said he was looking at the forest and not at the trees.
Miss Mary Juliet Lemmon has been chosen from many applicants to be staff assistant librarian at the Library of Congress in Washington. The appointment comes via Congressman E C Eicher and Dr Herbert Putnam, Librarian. Lemmon, trained in social library work at the University of Iowa, has Washington Iowa public library experience and plans to attend George Washington University night school next fall. The Lemmons travel by auto to Washington, D C, with Betty Eicher, expect a month away, visit Colon National Park, Jamestown Yorktown Williamsboro and Duke University before returning home. The trip follows a short stay in Washington and may include a southern drive afterward.
German Jew and American citizen Hel mut Hirsch, 21, an art student, was executed in Berlin after failed clemency appeals to Hitler. The high treason conviction cited explosives found in his possession and pleas by the United States ambassador William Dodd were rejected.
