Japanese Cultural Center to Rise Near Chinatown in Frisco
A $15 million Japanese cultural center is rising in San Francisco’s Chinatown area, replacing a former slum. The complex will include a 16-story Mikado Hotel, a 1,000-seat Kabuki theater, underground parking, and more than 100 shops around a Peace Plaza with a large pagoda. Groundbreaking occurred in November with 200,000 cubic yards of dirt removed. Backers even sold the dirt as fill to Oakland.
