Gemini 9 Launch Cleared for 15 Orbits and Docking

Gemini 9 crew Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan blasted off at 9 39 33 a m EDT on schedule reaching 144 to 169 mile orbit and moving toward the ATDA target docking satellite Glob. They will perform a three day flight including a planned spacewalk with rendezvous to occur about 1 40 p m EDT.

Surveyor Moon Pictures Signal Lunar Landing Prospects

Pasadena Calif UPI reports America's Surveyor spacecraft sent 863 beautifully clear pictures of the Moon including a possible mountain in the Sea of Storms, as engineers noted a wealth of data far surpassing Luna 9. The 620 pound robot, after a first night of 144 images, showed panoramic horizons and closeups of its own nuts and bolts, with the craft traveling 247 538 miles in 63 hours and promising continued transmissions from Goldstone.

Hughes backs rural urban plan with caveats

Iowa Governor Harold E. Hughes endorsed a GOP proposal for an office of urban and local affairs to liaise between city and state and coordinate federal aid. He suggested the office could fit within existing government structure rather than become a separate division. He backed continued regulation of casualty and fire insurers and noted uncertainty about President Johnson’s Des Moines fundraiser balcony tickets.

North Viet air raids continue into fourth day

Saigon reports U S warplanes flew 78 missions into North Vietnam marking the fourth straight day of the heaviest bombing since the pause ended. Seven American planes were lost, including an F105 Thunderchief whose pilot Capt. Robert D. Pielin of Chicago was rescued. Raids targeted Hanoi Hai phong Dong Hoi Vinh Thanh Hoa and the Mu Gia Pass. Ground forces, including the 1st Air Cavalry Division with South Korean and Vietnamese militia, killed 32 Viet Cong Thursday night into today.

Washington UPI reports President Lyndon Johnson organized conference ends with consensus on drastic steps to bring Negroes into America's affluent society. Ben W.
