Chickasaw county clerk Donald W. Barnett issued 23 marriage licenses on Saturday, June 1, with 21 couples tying the knot at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The event highlights a holiday mood as Love never takes a rest in Iowa.
Dr Sumner B Chase of Fort Dodge was installed as University of Iowa alumni association president during commencement activities in Iowa City. Benjamin F Butler of Waterloo retires as president.
Rene Colbert and George Richter of Waukegan Illinois were married 75 feet underground in the Crystal Lake cave seven miles south of Dubuque by Justice of the Peace Peter Olinger. They were the first couple to wed in Dubuque's underground cavern.
About 300 students sought certificates and degrees at the sixty third annual commencement in the men's gymnasium. President Charles E. Finley of Iowa State College, Ames, gave the commencement address. Exercises end the spring term with the summer quarter to begin Wednesday after Tuesday's registration.
More than 140 Iowa growers attended the fourth annual Iowa Horticultural Society field day at Iowa State College. Attendees toured 14 horticultural sections guided by staff from the college's horticulture department.
Centerville reports the first Appanoose county cabin is being reconditioned and moved to the city park by the local Daughters of Union Veterans chapter. The cabin, once home to Territorial Sheriff Perjue, will be dedicated June 14 in a ceremonial program. Territorials and Pioneer furniture are being collected for display.
Newton-Willard Bishop the Democratic candidate for Jasper County clerk campaigned Saturday night in an empty hallway. He found Forrest Bedell’s office locked and the street door secured after he returned to the building. No one was visible and no phones worked in the deserted offices.
President John Owen Gross of Simpson College urged 1940 graduates to blame neither heredity nor fate for future failures, noting success comes from building life around Christ as a guiding center. He cautioned that when flesh leads, man sinks to the animal, but when the soul leads, physical urges obey higher power.
German air force sent about 155 bombers in six waves to Paris in the first attack on a belligerent capital. A dud bomb nearly hit Ambassador William Bullitt as French and allied defenses fought the raid. Five schools and a temporary hospital were hit. authorities say multiple casualties occurred among civilians and nurses.
Mrs Anna Marek 75 died at 2 39 am at her Wellman area home after a four year illness. Funeral at 10 am Wednesday at the home with burial in Wassonville cemetery. Born Anna Violet Krejei in Iowa City September 23 1864 she married Frank Marek July 3 1881 and they had seven sons and six daughters. She is survived by Edward Syracuse Mo Albert John Elston Ia Paul Edith Hesseltine near Wellman Melae and Frank Kalona Bessie Peck Joe Vitera Louisa Texas Logue Mathers Keota Charles and Rose at home two nieces one nephew 26 grandchildren and 160 great grandchildren.
Sheriff HM Putnam asks Crawfordsville residents to help locate Patrick O'Reilly and John C. Long who are accused of stealing copper wiring from the lighted softball field at Crawfordsville. The wiring, part of the field's lighting system installed years ago, cost about $60 but cannot be replaced cheaply. Discovery occurred last week when repair work began.
Evan S Sellers aged 86 died at his home 747 East Second Street at 4 20 Sunday morning Born December 19 1853 in Cairo Iowa he married Florence Dawson July 21 1895 They had two daughters Mrs Sam Wilson Burlington and Mrs Harley Mayhew Washington He is survived by wife two daughters one granddaughter Carol Wilson one brother John Sellers and several nieces and nephews Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Vernon Carter of Marion Iowa officiating Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Sixty seven new cars sold in May in Washington county up from last year, eight sold the first day of June. Registrations for 1940 reach 5410, up from 5230 a year ago. trucks licensed total 822 versus 716 last year. Washington county Republicans renominate E L Stewart for state representative and Ned Morrow for supervisor. Stan Kiesey is named auditor and John Gwen county attorney. Governor results show Mr Gross ahead of Wilson with a county majority, while hospital addition project passes and jail propositions fail amid low Democratic primary interest.
Governor George A. Wilson wins the Republican nominating contest in a close result over Des Moines radio figure MR. R Gross. John K. Valentine secures the Democratic nomination for governor, while Irving H. Knudson trails in the GOP race. Major county by county margins favor Wilson in brisk returns.
Donald Smith and Bill Ritchie of Albia announce a new skating rink just outside the city on Highway 92 toward Ward Ainsworth. Skating available every evening except Sunday from 7:30 to 10:00, and Tue Thu Sat afternoons for ladies 2:30 to 4:90 and children 4 to 5:30. Grand opening set for tomorrow Tuesday evening.
Wayne and Glen Smith of Lake City were due for a reunion last week in Honolulu. Wayne serves in the U S Army and is stationed there. Glen is in the Navy and arrived aboard the aircraft carrier Saratoga.
The Supreme Court upheld a school board's expulsion of William and Lillian Gobitis from Minersville for refusing to salute the American flag on religious grounds. The Jehovah's Witnesses argued the pledge violated the second commandment against worship of images.
Temperatures climbed across Washington yesterday reaching 89 degrees after starting near 88 at 1 30 in the afternoon as residents felt the early summer heat.
