Karen Beck er, 3, daughter of Mr and Mrs Leo Becker, was pecked by a mother goose in Iowa. She sustained a black eye and a facial gash requiring several stitches after the attack.
Five Washington churches including Baptist United Presbyterian Foursquare Gospel Christian and Presbyterian begin daily vacation Bible schools Monday with two week runs weekdays 9 to 11:30 am except Saturday. Teens staff by Rev Fredmund Rev William M Nichol Dr F W Eastwood and others with closing programs planned.
Gabrie Juarez of Fort Madison failed to make a curve on Highway 61 in Montrose, resulting in a collision with Hale drug store. He paid a $385 fine for reckless driving and driving without a license plus damages from the crash.
A Des Moines woman called police to ask if a man she named was jailed. Sergeant J. K. Frankford told her he was not in custody, and she replied that the man is her husband and on a bender, asking that he be jailed or sent home.
Jack Kirtley of Knoxville was severely injured when a pole he worked on fell four miles east of Indianola. He suffered a crushed leg and bruises and was taken to Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines for treatment.
Des Moines youths of 18 or older who have one year of college and can pass a physical exam may enroll in free aviation instruction at Drake University this summer. Prof. Paul S. Helmick, head of the physics department and director of civilian pilot training, said courses started last fall will continue. The program grants a private pilot license, carries no military service obligation, and provides five hours of college credit.
Four people linked to the University of Iowa hospital sustained minor injuries when a rear tire blew out and the car left the road north of Mount Vernon. The occupants Dr. W. W. Kearney Dr. Dorothy Falkenstein Smith Mrs. John Gray and William Ergenbright were en route to Dubuque for the Iowa Crippled Children's clinic and were treated at University Hospital.
Sheriff B. Atherton announced the arrest of two of three Mason City youths who allegedly tried to fund a Lake Okoboji vacation by forging and passing checks in Charles City. Ernest Olson and William O'Donnell were jailed here, arrested by Deputy Caldwan for Floyd County authorities.
An information charging Felix Pete Ka wards of Peoria Illinois as Iowa representative for Century Distilling Co. of Peoria is filed in Burlington district court. State Agent Delbert Murray and Des Moines county attorney Raymond Wright say a warrant for Edwards' arrest issues and Edwards may be arrested anywhere in the state. Des Moines agents seized Edwards' car at a garage near his hotel where he has been living. he has not been seen there for days.
The country schools of Washington county sent 117 eighth graders to enter high school as Miss Jessie M. Parker, state superintendent, gave a commencement address. She urged students to keep their “razors” sharp, highlighted farm youths’ advantages, and stressed citizenship and duty while awards and diplomas were handed out to top students and ten high achievers received emblems.
Washington County voters head to the polls Monday for the biennial primary with five Republican county ticket contests and no Democratic candidates. Polling places shift in several towns while bond issues for hospital expansion and a new jail are on the ballot.
Washington residents form a Festicorn booster club for a fall corn festival with corn cob pipes for members. Al Goddard named chair, women invited but not required to smoke. entry fee 25 cents to fund the group. Six hundred pipes ordered, pipes from Washington Missouri. Plant decorations include corn plantings and a large corn mosaic map for schools. festive stationery printed in four colors featuring a corn ear.
Members of the Christian church present An Old-Fashioned Mother a three act play by Walter Ben Hare Thursday evening June 6 at 8 o clock in the church. Set in Canton New York twenty years ago with a cast led by Mrs Oral Norman and Mrs Frank Bradford the production supports a message of maternal love and forgiveness. Admission is ten and fifteen cents with receipts aiding church funds.
An important business meeting of the Methodist Men's club is called for Tuesday evening, June 4, at 8 00 by Karl Libe, the club president. All members are urged to attend and a late lunch will be served by units 2 and 10. Visitors include Mr and Mrs O Barnett of Newton and Mr and Mrs Sam Saunders and daughters of Ft Madison. Mr and Mrs Will Haney of Milton will visit Sunday with Mr and Mrs Frank Haney.
Paris reports heavy fighting on the Somme as German forces renew a mass assault to retake the Dunkirk bridgehead. Allied forces claim repeated German attacks were repelled with heavy losses. front sections near Amiens and Abbeville witness intense bombardment and armored action.
British and French survivors report German forces penetrated main allied lines guarding Dunkirk after heavy losses. They describe a last stand on a barricaded coast as evacuation continued, with about 80 percent of the BEF possibly evacuated, while one division remained near the port.
Berlin reports German military sources claim the British battleship Nelson, valued at about 35 million dollars and armed with 16 inch guns, has been sunk with around 70 percent casualties. Details were withheld for military reasons and could mark a major British naval blow.
Clerk R R Noonan reports Judge J G Patterson will visit Oskaloosa to hold a brief session of the March term next Tuesday June 4. The judge is expected to stay about one day before returning for further court work.
The county health unit announced one smallpox case in Homer Kephart who lives south of town. Close contacts have been vaccinated, the case quarantined, and precautions taken to prevent spread of the disease.
James Redd an 80 year old longtime Washington barber died this afternoon at the county home hospital where he had been for a week. Funeral services set for 10 30 Monday at Sherman’s funeral home likely conducted by an African Methodist church minister. He was born March 29 1860 presumably in the south and came to Washington as a youth. His wife Eliza Moore and two daughters Marie and Elizabeth are deceased. A sister in law Addie Clark of Oskaloosa survives with the rest of the family.
Professor Rice from Sioux Falls college will speak at the morning worship service tomorrow at the Baptist church in Sioux Falls. Rice has ties to Grand Island college and Sioux Falls college since consolidation. He is visiting Baptist churches in southeastern Iowa and will deliver a message of special interest. Services begin at 10 45 a m conducted by Rev I Fredmund.
